Chris was born in St. Albans, Vermont on June 20, 1950 to Albert “Pit” and Arlene and grew up in the Town of Richford. He graduated from Richford High School in 1968. Following high school, Chris was selected as a member of the 100th Session of the Border Patrol Academy in Los Fresnos, TX and graduated on October 20, 1971. Chris worked for the Federal Government for over 30 years. He started as a Border Patrol Agent in San Diego, CA and his career culminated while serving as an Intelligence Research Specialist for the Department of Homeland Security. Chris was extremely proud of his work accomplishments, but more importantly, the impact he had on others.

After Chris retired, he was elected to serve as a member of the Selectboard in the Town of Richford. As a member of the board, Chris served as the Police Commissioner, Animal Control Officer, and was responsible for the cemeteries. In addition, Chris was proud of his efforts of fixing up playgrounds, baseball fields, and work with the NOTCH Day Camp. Chris devoted much of his time for the betterment of his community. He was a selfless and prideful man, but he would never show it.

Chris loved to travel, and his travels took him to Yemen, Columbia, Jordan, Kenya, Botswana, South Africa, Zimbabwe and the United Arab Emirates among other countries. He loved cars and talked about cars often with Dave Mcallister, spending his summers at his family’s camp at Lake Carmi, hangout and hunt with his life-long buddies Mark Larviere, Terry O’Reilly and Dale Mercy and he was an avid Boston Red Sox fan. Chris was known as a chatterbox and for his quick wit. Chris had an infectious smile that would light up a room. Most importantly, Chris was proud of his children and was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother and uncle.

Chris was predeceased in death by his father, Albert, mother, Arlene, and grandson, Matthew Jr. He is survived by his wife, Sue, his seven children, Jeff, Joel and his wife Krystal, Nicholas, Brandon,
Matthew, Tony, and Leilani; his eight grandchildren, Cadence, La’Kiya, Madison, Addison, Olivia, Aaliyah, Londyn and Maxwell; stepchildren, Jessica Shurlow and her husband Scott, and Joseph Shepard; his brother Greg and his wife Dory; his sister-in-law Steph Garrow; and numerous nieces and nephews.

The family wishes to send a special thank you to Dr. Allan Eisemann and Dr. Richard Lovett of the Foley Cancer Center at Rutland Regional Medical Center, the nurses and support staff of the 5th floor Oncology Unit at Rutland Regional Medical Center, and Dr. Teddi Lovko and Dee at the Community Health Centers of Rutland for their wonderful care and compassion they provided Chris over the years. To Dr. Terri Nielsen of St. Albans Primary Care, thank you not only for the care you gave Chris, but your friendship.

A Celebration of Chris’ Life will be held at a time to be determined by his family.

ObituaryNov 29, 2017  OBITUARY: MOUNT HOLLY — Our beloved Evelyn Hazel Garrow, 94, of Mount Holly, Vermont, passed peacefully early Sunday morning, Nov. 26, 2017, in the presence of family, at the Mountain View Elder Care Center.

She entered this lifetime Sept. 21, 1923, in West Hartford, Vermont, daughter of Julis (John) LaPlant and Lillian (Butler) Longaway. She was one of seven children.

William Henry Garrow asked for her hand and they wed June 28, 1944. They spent 49 years together, some good, some not so good, 30 of which were dedicated to working on the family dairy farm in Mount Holly until the cattle were sold in the early '70s. Evelyn was a woman who wore many hats: mother, teacher of life, dairy farmer and her final employment was with General Electric for 15 years until heath issues forced her to retire. It's safe to say there wasn't any task she couldn't do, or attempt to do.

She was a fiercely independent woman filled with inspiration and a quiet fire that burned within her to travel and sightsee. Her travels were varied but her favorite was a trip to Churchill, Canada, to see the polar bears. Her contagious laugh, the ability for easy conversation and a smile that would light up any room will be missed.

During the time of her late husband's passing, she had designed and built a new home for them where she resided until July of this year. She loved her flower gardens and all the wildlife that it attracted.

Her legacy is carried on by three daughters Ruth Lawson and husband Thomas, of Escondido, California, Rebecca Wilson, of Boise, Idaho, and Rita Garrow Beardmore, of Shrewsbury, Vermont; three sons Roger Garrow and wife Diane, Robert Garrow and Russell Garrow and wife Joan, all of Mount Holly; a stepson, Edward Garrow, of Shrewsbury, Vermont; many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Waiting for her on the other side were her husband, William; a son, Richard Garrow; and two stepsons Louis Garrow and William Garrow Jr.

A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 2, 2017, at the Aldous Funeral Home, 44 North Main St., Rutland, Vermont.

The family will be having refreshments and celebrating Evelyn's life at the Holiday Inn, 476 Holiday Drive, Rutland, Vermont, at 3 p.m. Please come and share a story.

She graduated from Wallingford High School, class of 1948, and then attended Rutland Business College. Lois married Roland Garrow of Wallingford, where she raised her 5 boys until his passing. She worked for Wallingford Post Office and Rutland Post Office for 33 years, retiring in 1989. Then moved to Hawaii for 4 years to be near her 2 sons. Survivors include her sons Christopher (Carol) Garrow of Wallingford, VT, David (Josie) Garrow of Rutland, VT, Ronald (Marilyn) Garrow of Rutland, VT, and Stephen (Lisa) Garrow of S. Wallingford, VT; sisters Dawn Zontok, Barbara Paradis, and Aloha Gaylord; and 7 grandchildren, 9 great-grandchildren, and 3 great-great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by both parents; husband Roland Garrow; son Michael Garrow and his wife Debra, and brothers Gary Newhart, Robert Newhart, and Gail Newhart. A special thank you to the 5th floor nursing staff and palliative care team at Rutland Regional Medical Center and to the special care unit at The Meadows at East Mountain where she made her home. Per her wishes, there will be no public services. Arrangements are under the direction of Clifford Funeral Home.
