ObituaryJun 16, 2011  OBITUARY: VIRGINIA BEACH - Shirley D. Rountree Jr. died peacefully June 14, 2011 at Sentara Leigh Hospital. He was born Oct. 17, 1930 in Norfolk, the son of the late Shirley D. Rountree Sr. and Ethel E. Rountree. He attended Maury High School and graduated from Santa Ana High School and Santa Ana College, Santa Ana, Calif. An avid student, Mr. Rountree took courses at Stanford University and later at the Norfolk Division of The College of William and Mary. He retired from the Naval Air Engineering Center, Philadelphia, and Lakehurst, N.J. He enjoyed tennis, reading, travel and music and held a special place in his heart for The Philadelphia Orchestra, The Virginia Symphony and The Virginia Arts Festival. His survivors include his beloved wife of 45 years, Brenda Blackburn Rountree; his sisters-in-law, Lillian Blackburn Campbell of Winston Salem, N.C., Vivian Blackburn Gentry of Abingdon, Va., Wynona Buchanan Blackburn of Virginia Beach; and a brother-in-law, Ben Blackburn and his wife Betty of Cherryville, N.C. He also leaves behind an extended family of nieces, nephews and friends whom he loved dearly. Mr. Rountree was a gifted engineer, loving husband and loyal friend. His wry sense of humor, generous and gentle spirit, keen insight and innate intelligence will be greatly missed by all who knew him. The family will receive friends Friday, June 17, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Smith & Williams Funeral Home, 4889 Princess Anne Road, Virginia Beach, followed by a funeral service at 1 p.m. in the chapel. Interment will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery, 8100 Granby St., Norfolk. In lieu of flowers, the family will be honored if you make a donation to the charity of your choice.
