02 February 1861 - 26 May 1865
The American Civil War (1861-1865) was between eleven southern slave states (South Carolina, Mississippi, Florida, Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, Texas, Virginia, Arkansas, North Carolina and Tennessee), led by Jefferson Davis, who declared their secession from the United States and formed the Confederate States of America (the "Confederacy or CSA"). They fought against the United States federal government (the "Union"), which was supported by all the free states and the five border slave states (California, Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont and the newly-formed West Virginia, along with the territories of Colorado, Dakota, Nebraska, Nevada, New Mexico, Utah and Washington).
