OBITUARY: Mrs. Emily Wittler Euler, 71, widow of Christian G. Euler, died at 1:14 a.m. today, in the residence, 623 Riverview Avenue.

She is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Marie Winn, of Portsmouth, and Mrs. F.W. Black, of Richmond; five sons, August H., Christian G and William W. Euler, of Portsmouth, and Walter C. Euler of Columbus, Ohio, and Vernon J. Euler, of Chicago, Ill; two brothers, William and J.T. Wittler, of Baltimore, MD, and seven grandchildren. Mrs. Euler was a member of the First Lutheran Church.

Funeral services will be conducted in the residence, Saturday afternoon at 3 o’clock. Burial will be in Oak Grove Cemetery.

OBITUARY: Margaret Rountree Ward, 91, formerly of the 1500 block of Middle Swamp Road, died Dec. 11, 2003, in Nansemond Pointe Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center, Suffolk.

Mrs. Ward was born in Gates County, N.C. and was one of seven children of the late Dorsey and Nettie Corbitt Rountree. For more than 60 years, she was an active member of Eureka Baptist Church where she had been a choir member and had taught Sunday school. She had served in leadership capacities in the Corapeake Extension Homemakers Club, the Gates County Council of Extension Homemakers Clubs and the NC Homemakers Association. A member of the Holly Rebekah Lodge of the Rebekah Assembly, International Order of Oddfellows of NC, she had served as district president and as president of the Rebekah Assembly of NC.

Mrs. Ward was instrumental in organizing the Gates County Unit of the American Cancer Society and served as state director and president of the local chapter for a number of years. She had been a member of the Democratic Party since 1933 and for a number of years served as precinct vice-chairman and later as precinct chairman.

Preceded in death by her husband, Walter Aleck Ward Sr. and her son, John Atwood Ward, she is survived by her children, son, Walter A. Ward Jr. and wife Etheleen of Chesapeake, daughter, Frances Ward Brooks and husband William and son, Thomas A. Ward and wife Betty, all of Raleigh; her daughter-in-law, Annie Marie Ward of Suffolk; 10 grandchildren, Michelle Ward Bunch, Walter A. Ward III, William M. Brooks Jr., Robert W. Brooks, Amanda Brooks Carson, Elizabeth T. Brooks, John A. Ward II, Beth Ward Langston, Thomas Alan Ward Jr. and David A. Ward; and 10 great-grandchildren.

A funeral will be held Sunday at 3:30 p.m. in Eureka Baptist Church by the Rev. Cameron Currin. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Friends may join the family today from 7 to 8:30 p.m. in Miller Funeral Home, Gatesville. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association, the Nansemond-Suffolk Rescue Squad or to the building fund of Eureka Baptist Church.

OBITUARY: Walter Aleck Ward, 78, of Route 1, a retired farmer, died Nov. 25, 1990, in a Suffolk nursing home.

Mr. Ward, a native of Chowan County, was a member of Eureka Baptist Church. He was a member of Holly Grove Lodge 12, Independent Order of Odd Fellows, and had served twice as grand master of the North Carolina I.O.O.F. He was a former member of Sunbury Ruritan Club.

Survivors include his wife, Margaret Rountree Ward; a daughter, Frances Brooks of Raleigh; three sons, Walter A. Ward Jr. of Chesapeake, John A. Ward of Sunbury and Thomas A. Ward of Raleigh; and 10 grandchildren.

The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday in Eureka Baptist Church by the Rev. Hines Adams and the Rev. Floyd Enzor. Burial with Odd Fellows rites will be in the church cemetery. Friends may join the family from 7 to 9 p.m. today in Miller Funeral Home, Gatesville.

Memorial donations may be made to the Gates County Rescue Squad.

OBITUARY: John Abner Rountree and Emily Jane Sanderlin Dudley Walker were married 15 September 1867.

John Abner Rountree, son of Solomon Rountree and his wife Amelia Hudgins, was born 3 July 1833. He departed this life 11 December 1899--age 66. He was a farmer. He served in the Confederate Army.

Emily Jane Sanderlin, daughter of Dorsey Asa Sanderlin and his wife Lydia Walkup, was born in 11 Dec 1834 in Camden County, NC. Emily Jane was reputed to be the belle of the tri-county ball the year she was sixteen. Her family aspired a higher education for her, but she eloped that year with Stephen Dudley of Elizabeth City. Their son William was born in 1852 and Stephen Dudley died shortly thereafter.
Emily married next Thomas Walker, a widower with 8 children some older than herself.
Thomas was born 13 Dec 1807 in Currituck Co, the son of John Walker and wife Sarah Northern [born 8 Jan 1775]. Thomas had two siblings: John Walker Jr and Fannie Ann Walker who was born 13 Feb 1809.
Thomas Walker died 3 July 1865 leaving Emily Jane a widow for the second time with three sons of her own plus four young step-sons to rear.
On 15 September 1867 she married for the third time John Abner Rountree of Gates County.

In May 1898, Emily Jane's son Beaurie Walker, the sailor, came to her home sick with small pox. While nursing Beaurie Walker, Emily Jane caught the disease and died 16 June 1898 at the age of 64. At her death bed request, Emily Jane's body was interred beside her mother Lydia in a cemetery in Camden County.
John Abner Rountree died eighteen months later 11 Dec 1899 and was buried in the Rountree Cemetery in Gates County.
