Born in Herkimer, New York, August 1, 1917, she was a daughter of the late Herbert and Elva Hartom Spencer.

Before retirement, Margery worked for many years as a member of the dietary staff at what is now, the Seacrest Retirement Home on Ocean Avenue in West Haven. Margery had always been a dedicated and active member of the First Baptist Church, Center Street, West Haven, and an avid reader, sewer, and quilter.

Her busy hands have made wonderful treasures for her many beloved grandchildren. Margery is survived by five children, Barbara (Vincent) Kosobiecki of West Haven, Doreen Urban and Harold Alling, both of Land O'Lakes, FL, Andrew Alling of South Carolina, and Craig (Laureen) Alling of West Haven. Also surviving are her dearly cherished 18 grandchildren, 29 great grandchildren, and 4 great, great, grandchildren as well as her sister Vivian Davis of Herkimer, NY.

Besides her husband Harold, Margery was predeceased by a daughter and son-in-law, Ellen and Michael Anderson, her son-in-law Joseph Urban, a brother Ernest Spencer, and a sister Wauletta Mae Bennett.

The funeral will be held at the Keenan Funeral Home, 238 Elm Street, West Haven, Saturday at 10:00 AM. Burial will follow in Oak Grove Cemetery. Family and friends are invited to call at the funeral home Friday from 4 to 8 PM. Online condolences may be made at www.keenanfuneralhome.com

ObituaryJun 30, 2006  OBITUARY: LAYNG MARTINE - A Greenwich resident for the past 45 years, the last 13 in Old Greenwich, Layng died peacefully on Tuesday, June 27 at the age of 87. For the last 18 months he had been cared for by an extraordinary group of competent and gentle people at The Nathaniel Witherell.

Born in Orange, New Jersey in 1918, he attended The Browning School in New York City, Newark Academy, and graduated from Columbia High School in South Orange, New Jersey where he met his future wife Jean Kinkead. He graduated from Princeton University in 1939.

Layng was a lieutenant in the Navy in World War II serving in the South Pacific. After the war, he discovered the world of advertising joining Young & Rubicam, Inc. as a copy editor. He went on to become an account supervisor with accounts including Time/Life, Arrow Shirts, and The Travelers Insurance Companies. He was happy to have been the first non-illustrator elected to membership in the Society of Illustrators. He retired from Y&R as a vice president in 1970. Soon thereafter he started his own agency, Martine & Co. in Greenwich. During the next 20 years he became increasingly involved in the community serving on the boards of The Family Center, The Community Chest (later the United Way), Community Answers, The Putnam School (now The Putnam-Indian Field School), and The Mews.

Layng loved his wife, his family, his house, gardening, nature, beauty, dogs, and of course the cocktail hour. His innate ability to find humor in everything, lives on in all who knew him.

He is survived by Jean, his wife of 65 years, two daughters, Suzanne Martine of New York City and Anne Martine Cook of Greenwich; three sons and their wives Layng (Jr.) and Linda of Nashville, Tennessee, Eugene and Pamela of New Canaan, and John and Nanci of Northampton, Massachusetts; four grandsons, Layng Martine III of Peconic, New York, Tucker and Apple Martine of Seattle, and Mac Martine of San Francisco and Remy Cook of Greenwich. He is also survived by his cousin Jean Caruso of Wayne, New Jersey.

In lieu of flowers, and in celebration of Layng's life, the family hopes that friends will give to a cause dear to their hearts.
