ObituaryJun 30, 2007  OBITUARY: Bill Brooks died peacefully and suddenly on Friday, June 29, 2007 surrounded by his loving family. He was preceded in death by his father, John W. Brooks, Sr., and his mother, Mary Tremer Brooks.
Bill was born in Richmond, VA, on December 11, 1930 and moved to Raleigh in 1944. He graduated from Cathedral Latin High School. After business school, he devoted 37 years of his life to a successful career at IBM. Early in his career, he served nine years in the U.S. Army Reserves. On his 25th anniversary with IBM, he was named to the Order of the Long Leaf Pine in recognition of his distinguished service. As a retiree, he volunteered with Senior Net, attended the Triangle Pen Club and the Rex Wellness Center, and tended his garden.
He married Frances Elizabeth Ward on July 1, 1961. Together they raised four children, who have blessed them with six grandchildren. A devoted family man, he loved coaching little league sports teams and was actively involved in his children's activities and the church, Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church.
His surviving family includes his beloved wife of 46 years, Frances; his son, William M. Brooks, Jr. of Fayetteville, his wife Sabrina Sowell Brooks, their children Will and Mack; his son, Bob Brooks of Raleigh, his wife Laura Conder Brooks, their children Hayden, Scott and Emma; his daughter, Amanda Brooks Carson of Raleigh, her husband Chris Carson, their son Jack; his daughter, Elizabeth Brooks Sappenfield of Brookline, MA, her husband Henry Sappenfield; and his brother, John W. Brooks, Jr., of Fletcher, NC. Bill will be greatly missed.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Rex Wellness Center, care of the Rex Hospital Foundation.
The family would like to thank the City of Raleigh Fire and EMS personnel and the staff of Wake Medical Trauma Center, who provided such excellent support in Bill's time of need.
Friends may visit with the family on Sunday afternoon July 1, 2007 from 4:00-6:00 p.m. at the Brown- Wynne Funeral Home, 300 St. Mary's Street, Raleigh, NC.
The interment service will be held at the Eureka Baptist Church in Corapeake, NC on Monday July 2, 2007 at 2:00 p.m.
