ObituaryMar 4, 1892  OBITUARY: Unite W. Keith was a descendant of the Rev. James Keith. He was a Grandson of Unite Keith (D. 1836 Sheldon, VT and a Revolutionary War Veteran). Also related to Captain Alfred Horton Keith Co. K, 6th Vt. Husband of Lucy Williams Keith, married March 4th 1859, Cambridge VT. (Buried next to wife, shares same Obelisk type gravestone.) Farmed in Fletcher Vermont near Half Moon Pond. Enlisted Company E 13th Vermont Regiment Aug. 20, 1862. By Sep. 8, 1862 he was elected 6th Corporal. Camped and drilled on the Fair Grounds at Morrisville with others, before taking the train south to Brattleboro. Officially Mustered in at Brattleboro Vermont October 10, 1862 as a 6th Corporal. Promoted twice, to 5th and then 4th Corporal. Wrote several humorous letters home to the Editor Lamoille County Newspaper about camp life that this Biographer located during research. Several lines of his letters are quoted in two recent Civil War Books. The 13th VT was camped for a time at Wolf Run Shoals in Virginia. Heard shots fired near Fairfax Courthouse. Saw action at Gettysburg when the 13th was put out in front of the Union lines (along with others) and lay down between the knolls, which are present in front of the main lines, just south of the Famous Copse of Trees at the "Angle". They were stretched out toward the Codori House and as Pickets men approached the "Angle" they rose up and fired into their right flank. Later, some had to about face to the south as the southern boys later flowed around the south end of the Codori house and approached their rear. The 13th being a 9 Month Regiment, Unite Keith was mustered out July 21, 1863. Family lore has it that he gave his gold pocket watch to his young son Ira to keep for him, and the boy returned it upon his fathers safe return from the war. The only known photo of Unite was taken to Washington State by a distant relative who died. Photo is lost! Unite was this Biographer's Great Great Grandfather.
