ObituaryOct 13, 2013  OBITUARY: Karen Lynne Hoaglund Hauge, 71, of Big Timber, passed away Friday, Oct. 11, 2013 at her home.

Karen was born in Highland Park Hospital in Highland Park, Ill., on May 31, 1942, to Howard and Evelyn Hoaglund. She graduated from Glenbrook North High School in Northbrook, Ill., where she competed with her synchronized swimming team. She went on to attend the University of Arizona and was a member of the Quadrille Horse Team.

Karen grew up in Illinois, but loved the time her family spent at the Remuda Ranch in Wickenberg, Ariz., and her summers working on the Tyler Ranch in Big Timber. It is there where she met her husband, George Roger Hauge. Karen and Roger were married on Oct. 26, 1963. They moved to Belgrade where they had their first child, Jeff, and then on to Harlowton, Mont. In 1968, their daughter, Julianne, was born, and in 1970 they moved to Bridger, Mont. The family remained in Bridger until 1994, when Karen and Roger returned to Big Timber, building a house on Lower Deer Creek.

Karen enjoyed life, particularly the people that surrounded her. She loved Arizona and the people she met there, but she also loved her summers at the Tyler Ranch. She loved to ride her horse, Sundance, and to travel. Some of her favorite trips were to Chicago, to the island of Saint Martin, to the Grand Canyon, to the Denver Stock Show, and to Fredericksburg, Texas. She also loved to haunt antique stores and to find the stories behind the photograph. Karen's greatest joys, however, were closer to home. She loved her family beyond measure, and she loved spending time with her grandchildren, watching them play and grow.

Karen is widely remembered as being the longtime practice administrator for Bridger Veterinary Clinic, where she miraculously made things work for well over 20 years and then again at the Big Timber Vet Clinic. She was also an active member of both the Bridger and Big Timber communities. In Bridger, she served as president of the Women's Club and as a member of the Town Council, volunteered as a member of the ambulance crew, and played many a good hand of bridge as a charter member of the Bridge Club. In Big Timber, she served as the treasurer of the Cottonwood Resource Council. She also enjoyed working at Hodges Fine Art and Raging Bull Antique Store in Big Timber. Karen was a devout Eastern Orthodox Christian and a member of the St. Nicholas of South Canaan Orthodox Church.

Karen was known to so many as a good and kind friend, and she will be long remembered by those for whom she cared. She is remembered for her gentle laugh, for her considerate nature, for her kindness and thoughtfulness, and for being a loving mother and grandmother. She will also be remembered for her soft button-down shirts, for having a dress-up box, and for teaching the childhood trauma of learning to share. She taught people how to lay back and watch clouds, served as a refuge for many, and cared for those who could not care for themselves. For all who knew her, she was a model of infinite patience and infinite love.

Karen is survived by her husband, Roger; son Jeff (Cindy) Hauge of Sioux Falls, S. D; daughter Julianne (David) Matthews of Chicago, Ill; grandchildren Nathan and Chloe Hauge, Cass and Hayden Matthews; and brother Donald (Nancy) Hoaglund, of Pinckney, Mich. She was preceded in death by her parents, Howard and Evelyn Hoaglund.

A sincere thank you to Dr. Randall Gibb and his physicians assistants, Doreen and Caroline, and his entire staff for their perseverance , their expert care, and their compassion for Karen and her family during these last 2+ years. Karen's family is also thankful for Hearts and Hands Hospice and Dr. Ace Walker, in Big Timber, whose kind care was such a comfort.

Prayer services will be held 7 p.m. Tuesday Oct. 15, at St. Nicholas of South Canaan Orthodox Church in Billings (401 Lewis Avenue). Funeral services will be held at the church 10 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 16. Graveside committal services will follow at 3:30 p.m. at Mountain View Cemetery in Big Timber.
