LOWELL -- Beverly Haberman, a former Dracut resident and retired schoolteacher in town who later wrote a book on her struggle with blindness while continuing as an educator, died yesterday, June 6, in Lowell, after an extended illness. She was 62.
She was born in Lowell on Oct. 18, 1943, the daughter of the late Carl Y. and Lena (Parkhurst) Haberman. She received her early education in the Lowell and Dracut school systems. She graduated from Dracut High School in 1961. She received a bachelor's degree in education from the Lowell Technological Institute in 196
Mrs. Haberman started her teaching career in Dracut at the Greenmont School. She taught third and fourth grades until blindness forced her to retire in 1981. She later graduated from the Carroll Center for the Blind, and became an extremely active member of the Lowell Association for the Blind, where she taught Braille.
She was the author of her own autobiography, Ain't No Stopping Us NOW, published in 1997. She received the Etta P. McPhee award and many other awards for her independence and personal courage. She was also, a member of the former Highland Players. Mrs. Haberman was a member of Christ Church United in Dracut.
Her survivors include a daughter and her husband, Kristin and Gerson Colon of Dracut; a sister and her husband, Carlene and Joseph Buote of Dracut; and four brothers and three sisters-in-law, Carl B. Haberman of Hudson, N.H., Robert and Sylvia Haberman of Tilton, N.H., Donald and Donna Haberman of South Carolina, and Warren and Anne Haberman of Raymond, N.H; two granddaughters, Lydia Colon and Natalie Colon, both of Dracut. She also leaves her beloved boyfriend and companion, Harvey Lepine of Dracut; and many nieces and nephews.
Haberman was also the sister of the late Francis Edwin Haberman.
