Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Michelle Ward Bunch and Bruce Bunch, and son, Walter Aleck Ward, III. Along with her grandchildren, Alissa Taylor Ward (Lauren Godbout), Tyler Justin Bunch, and Alec Jordan Ward (Marisa Borek), and special nieces and nephews.

A Funeral Service will be held Saturday, March 12, 2022, at 11:00 a.m. at R. W. Baker & Co. Funeral Home and Crematory, 509 West Washington Street, Suffolk, VA 23434. The family will receive friends prior to the service at 10:00 a.m. Dr. Wilfred C. Gatling, III and Dr. Thurman Hayes, Jr. will officiate. Mrs. Ward was born in Gates County on January 22, 1925, and was one of seven children of the late John Thomas and Donnie Smith Matthews. A retired data programmer with Dominion Power, she was a member of Reynoldson Baptist Church.

Surviving are her husband of nearly 49 years, Walter A. Ward, Jr; children, Michelle Ward Bunch and husband Bruce of Lorton, VA and Walter A. Ward, III of Raleigh, NC; her sister, Virginia Dare Matthews of Portsmouth; and three grandchildren.

A visitation will be held Wednesday from 6 to 7 p.m. at Sturtevant Funeral Home, 5201 Portsmouth Blvd.

Funeral services will be held Thursday at 11:00 a.m. in Reynoldson Baptist Church and will be conducted by the Rev. Cody Brinkley and the Rev. Jimmy Smith. Friends may join the family in the social hall immediately following the service. The graveside portion of the funeral will be held at 1:30 p.m. in Holly Lawn Cemetery in Suffolk. Miller Funeral Home, 304 Main Street, Gatesville, is handling arrangements.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Reynoldson Baptist Church, in care of Debbie Smith, 134 Reynoldson Road, Gates, NC 27937, or to a charity of one's choice.
