ObituaryMay 8, 2007  OBITUARY: YAKIMA - Janet Isabel Lewis, 95, passed away at Yakima Regional Medical and Cardiac Center on Tuesday, May 1, 2007. Janet was the daughter of Roy and Ida Horner, born on May 11, 1911 in Enosburg Falls, Vermont. After graduating from high school, Janet entered nurse's training at Physicians Hospital in Plattsburg, NY, did postgraduate work at Columbia University and worked as a nurse. In 1936, she married Carl Lewis and moved to Aruba, Netherland Antilles where they spent the next 28 years raising their two children, before retiring and moving to Florida. Janet was an avid bridge player and loved to garden. She was a bright, articulate and cultured person, but had a playful side to her that loved ice skating, skiing and dancing. After Carl's death in 1987, she moved to Yakima to be closer to her children and their families.

Janet will be remembered for her strength, discipline and especially her strong will, which accounted for her long life. She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Peter and Jean Lewis of Pomona, CA and a daughter Deborah Moore of Yakima; grandchildren Erin, Denim and Meghan Moore and Melissa Littlefield, and seven great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and sister.

A celebration of Janet's life will be held on Friday, May 11, 2007 at 10:00 a.m. at Living Care Retirement Community, Living View Sunrise Room, 211 North 40th Avenue, Yakima. In lieu of flowers, those wishing to honor her memory may contribute to the American Heart Association or a charity of your choice. Shaw and Sons Funeral Directors are in charge of arrangements.

The family would like to express their gratitude and appreciation to the staff of Hillcrest at Summitview Assisted Living and Summitview Health Care Center for their outstanding efforts, concern and assistance to Janet over the last six years. They would especially like to thank Dr. Victor Sharpe for twenty years of compassion and exceptional medical care he gave to Janet.

ObituarySep 23, 2006  OBITUARY: CHICOPEE - Robert E. A. Lafley, 90, a longtime resident of the Fairview section of Chicopee was Called Safely Home on Tuesday, September 19, 2006. He was born in Enosburg Falls, Vermont on March 28, 1916, a beloved son of the late Leo I. and Margaret (Limoges) Lafley. He moved to Fairview in 1962 and lived there until moving to Providence Place in Holyoke in September of 2005. In 1934, he served as a member of the Civilian Conservation Corps. He enlisted in the United States Army in 1935 and served with Headquarters Battery of the 11th Coast Artillery and attained the rank of Private. He continued his military service in the United States Army during World War II and served with Company I of the 354th Infantry. He received the American Defense Service Medal with Clasp, the European African Middle Eastern Theater Campaign Ribbon and the World War II Victory Medal. Following World War II, he re-enlisted in the United States Air Force and served during the Korean War and received the National Defense Service Medal. He attained the rank of Staff Sergeant and retired in 1962 after serving his country faithfully for over 24 years. He moved to Fairview and was employed as a security guard at the former Milton Bradley Company in Springfield and retired in 1979. He was a communicant of Saint Anne Church in Fairview where he served his parish for many years as an usher. He was a member of the Fairview Council 4044 Knights of Columbus and volunteered at many council functions, including their weekly bingo. He was also a charter member of the Fairview Assembly 2670, 4th Degree of the Knights of Columbus. He was a member of the Blue Army of Our Lady of Fatima, the Cursillo of the Diocese of Springfield and the Apostolate of the Suffering. He was also a member of the American Legion Post 353 in Willimansett, the VFW Post 625 in Chicopee, the Retired Air Force Association, the Air Force Memorial Foundation, a Hampden County Deputy Sheriff and a volunteer at Jericho in Holyoke. He was predeceased by his beloved wives, Mary M. (Janeczek) Lafley who was Called Home on January 21, 1990 and Rita Y. (Fleury) Lepine Lafley who was Called Home on December 4, 1998. He leaves his loving children, Robert P. Lafley and his wife Marcia of Denver, CO, Carol Ann Quinn of Belleview, FL, and Francis T. Lafley and his wife Nancy of Commerce City, CO. His loving step-daughters, Norma R. Gdula and her husband Chester of Chicopee and Linda D. Koske and her husband William of Chester, MA. His seven cherished grandchildren, his three cherished great-grandchildren and his four cherished step-grandchildren. His dear brother, Roland Lafley of Bellflower, CA. His dear brother-in-law, Roger Nadeau of Fairview. His dear sister-in-law, Theresa Chapdelaine of Chicopee. He also leaves many dear nephews, nieces and cousins and his good friend, Bill Wilson. His funeral will be held Tuesday morning, September 26, 2006 at 8:45 a.m. from the St. Pierre Phaneuf Fairview Chapels (Phaneuf-Blais), 506 Britton Street in Chicopee, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. in Saint Anne Church, 30 College Street in Fairview. His burial with Military Honors will follow the Mass at Saint Aloysius Cemetery on Berkshire Avenue in Indian Orchard. His family will receive friends at the funeral home in the Fairview Chapel on Monday, September 25, 2006 from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. The parking lot is located in the rear of the funeral home. For those who prefer to make a memorial donation, they may be made in his memory to Jericho, PO Box 1039, Holyoke, MA 01041-1039.

Eileen was born on July 12th 1923 in Orwell, Vt., the daughter of George Thomas and Mary Agnes (Lafley) Thayer.

She was educated in Hubbardton and Orwell schools and graduated from West Rutland High School with the Class of 1941.

Eileen married her husband, John F. Brough, on October 26th 1947 at the St. John the Baptist Church in Castleton, Vermont.

In 1954, Eileen and John built the Castleton Snack Bar and brought the first soft ice cream, frozen joy to the area.

From 1958 to 1968, they owned and operated The Stables, a well-known Lake Bomoseen restaurant and lounge, also known as Crystal Ledge Lodge where many guests became family.

After the sale of The Stables, they operated the Fort Warren Restaurant in Castleton, Vt. until the sudden death of John on August 22nd 1969.

Eileen returned to her former occupation as a telephone operator for the New England Telephone Co. where she had been employed from 1941 to 1954 as switchboard operator for the Town of Castleton, Vt.

She retired in 1984 after 28 years as an operator, supervisor/trainer and her last assignment was in the engineer's office.

Eileen continued to work for the next 30 years for Fitz-Vogt, provider of Meals on Wheels, as a meal deliverer and site manager at the Bardwell Hotel and for the Clarendon Seniors Community Grange Center where she enjoyed delivering the Thursday meals for more than 20 years until her retirement in December 2014.

Eileen worked for many years at Rutland County polling sites as a clerk and was a justice of the peace.

She was a member and past president of the Castleton Women's Club and a member of the Castleton American Legion Auxiliary Post #50.

Besides her parents and husband, she was predeceased by her daughter, Suzanne; her brother, George Buddy Thayer; her longtime partner, Hubie Pratt; and by Thomas' partner, Peggy Gage.

Arrangements by the Durfee Funeral Home in Fair Haven, Vt.

There will be a spring burial in the Brough family plot at the Hillside Cemetery in Castleton, Vt.

Obituary  OBITUARY: The world lost another WWII veteran on January 13, when S. Paul Lafley, age 101, passed away peacefully at his residence at Homewood at Plum Creek in Hanover, PA. Paul was a true renaissance man. He had impeccable manners; a true gentleman who shared his gift of storytelling, jokes, and adventures with friends and family of all ages.

Paul was born in Enosburg Falls, VT in 1923. He grew up in a small town surrounded by farms. His boyhood was filled with ice skating, skiing and helping out at his grandfather's barber shop on Main Street. He adored his older brothers, Lyndon and Cedric, and relished in telling stories of the trials and triumphs of being the youngest. After graduating from Enosburg Falls High School, he followed his brothers into the Army, where they were serving overseas. He trained as a machine gunner in the 63rd Infantry Division in Southern France. As he was preparing to be deployed to Japan, the war ended. He was then sent to Germany to work in the officer jeep maintenance area and swore he personally worked on General Eisenhower's jeep.

Paul readjusted to life as a civilian by moving to Baltimore, MD, for a job that was advertised in the newspaper. His brother Cedric gave him a ride him from Vermont to Baltimore and deposited him and his one suitcase at a boarding house. He soon met his true love there, Helen Cable, who worked in the company office. They enjoyed 52 years of marriage surrounded by friends and family. They settled in a home built in the late 1700's in My Lady's Manor, MD. Paul spent most of his career as an Account Executive with Peterson, Howell & Heather (PHH) in Hunt Valley, MD, and traveled all over the U.S. and Canada. Paul and Helen loved to entertain, and he was known far and wide for his Highballs and "Lady Drinks". He said the difference between the two was a maraschino cherry and a splash of lime. He also loved telling jokes, and as the perfect gentleman that he was, he had separate jokes for mixed company.

He and Helen were given the privilege of "house sitting" for Ambassador Stuart Symington for two years. He loved being the "lord of the manor", overseeing the house and the staff, but declined the chauffer's ride to work in favor of driving his own car. He purchased a tuxedo and Helen bought a few evening gowns, and they enjoyed every minute of their stay.

Helen passed after several years of declining health with Paul as her beloved caretaker. After her death in 2001, he continued skiing, working as a volunteer at Ladow Gardens in Baltimore, and keeping up with family and friends. He never let time or distance hamper his affection for loved ones.

He remarried in 2004 to Teresa Polsiki and they moved into Homewood in Hanover. Once again, he became a caretaker to his wife, but still found the time and energy to participate in golfing, skiing and volunteering. He took a ski trip to Patagonia at age 90 "while the mountains were still there." He appreciated comic strips and often sent funny stories to his nephews with news articles. When guests came to visit, he gave tours of the area, and once he started to use a walker, no one could keep up with him. He made the characters in his life come alive as he shared stories of his grandparents, brothers and friends. He was a kind, generous, and intensely loyal to those who had the privilege to know him.

An interment will be held in the spring at St. James Episcopal Church Cemetery in Monkton, Maryland.

He is survived by his nephews, John, Peter, James, and Stephen Lafley, and their spouses. His nieces, Jacqueline Lupac Rine, the Reverend Mollie Alexander Williams,and his great niece and loving friend, Donna Miller. He was predeceased by his niece Mary Lou Lafley Robinson. He also leaves behind many great-nephews and nieces and friends, and children of friends. He always said he was privileged to know and live through seven generations in his family.
