Mr. Gurganus was born in Williamston, N.C., and was employed with the Naval Supply Center. He was a member of London Bridge Baptist Church and was a U.S. Navy veteran.

Survivors include his wife, Mildred Hofler Gurganus; one son, Richard Gurganus of Gallatin, Tenn; two daughters, Carol Copeland of Suffolk and Linda Cordon of Bath, N.C; one brother, John Hatton Gurganus of Williamston, N.C; two sisters, Elsie Hatch of Virginia Beach and Faye Ferris of Williamston; and seven grandchildren.

A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday in Kellum Funeral Home, Bonney Road Chapel, by the Rev. Tommy Taylor. Burial will be in Rosewood Memorial Park. Contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, 20 Koger Center, Suite 233, Norfolk, Va. 23502.

ObituaryJan 30, 2010  OBITUARY: NEW BEDFORD — Ruth Rita (Garrant) Baptiste, 74, of New Bedford, passed away on Friday, January 29, 2010, at Hathaway Manor, after a period of declining health. She was the widow of Joseph P. Baptiste; and daughter of the late Joseph and Rita (Lapierre) Garrant.

She was born in New Bedford and lived in Fairhaven and returned to New Bedford in 1979. She was formerly employed as a bookkeeper.

In her leisure time she enjoyed attending yard sales and meat raffles, but most of all she loved being with her family, grandchildren and her cat “Sassy.”

Survivors include her son, Robert J. Baptiste and his companion, Debbie Gautreau and her six children; two daughters, Sandra Baptiste and Sharon Rego, both of Freetown; five grandchildren; and a great- grandchild.

She was the mother of the late Steven Baptiste and sister of the late Delores Savaria.

Visitation will be Monday 5-7 PM at Rock Funeral Home. Her Funeral Services will be Tuesday in the Funeral Home at 10:30 AM followed by interment at Sacred Heart Cemetery.2
