A member of the Sunbury Ruritan Club, he had formerly been a member of the Sunbury Volunteer Fire Department.
Surviving are his wife, Hazel Stallings Hofler; one daughter, Betty H. Watson of Whiteville, N.C; one son, James C. Hofler of Newport News, Va; and three grandchildren.
Graveside services will be held at 4 p.m. Friday in Damascus Christian Church Cemetery by the Rev. Riddick Pearce. Miller Funeral Home, Gatesville, is handling arrangements. Friends may join the family at the residence.

Born in Pasquotank County, NC, he was the son of the late Erskine L. and Helon Williams Brothers and was the husband of the late Kathleen Bray Brothers and of the late Dorothy Hofler Brothers.
Mr. Brothers was a veteran of WWII having served in the United States Navy. He later retired as a machinist at Norfolk Naval Shipyard. Mr. Brothers was a lifelong member of Newland United Methodist Church where he was the men’s Sunday School teacher for over 40 years and sang in the choir. He belonged to the Newland-Providence Ruritan Club for over 50 years. He was a member of the New Lebanon Lodge #314 AF & AM for 75 years; the New Bern Scottish Rite Bodies KCCH; the Elizabeth City York Rite Bodies KYCH; and the Sudan Shriners.
Mr. Brothers is survived by his children, Leon Brothers and wife Bonnie of Elizabeth City, NC, Marilyn Brothers of Cary, NC, Joyce Courtney of Apex, NC, and Glenn Brothers and wife Amy of Fuquay-Varina, NC; eight grandchildren and eight great grandchildren; step-children, Julia Lynch and husband John of Chapel Hill, NC, Martha Lilly and husband Doug of Gatesville, NC, Helen Jett and husband Jim of Asheville, NC, and Lynn Blackmon and husband Mike of Greensboro, NC; seven step-grandchildren; sisters, Velma Jackson and husband Carol, and Una Mae Jackson, all of Elizabeth City, NC; and many nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be held on Monday, May 17, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. at Newland United Methodist Church with Rev. Toni Wood officiating. Burial will follow at West Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to Newland United Methodist Church, C/O J.C. Harris, 403 Pineview Drive, Elizabeth City, NC 27909. Receiving her certification from UNC-CH, she had retired in 1981 after 20 years as a public health nurse serving the Perquimans County Health Dept., the Hertford-Gates Health Dept., and the Elizabeth City District Health Dept. Prior to that, she had worked as a nurse at Roanoke-Chowan Hospital in L Ahoskie. A member of Damascus Christian Church, she also was a member of the NC Public Health Association and the NC State Re- tirees Organization.

Surviving are her husband, L Wilbur Brooks Carter Sr. On Feb. 26 they celebrated 63 years of marriage. Also surviving are two daughters, Carole C. Smith and husband Jack of Gates and Alice C. Moore and husband Edward of Sunbury; two sons, Johnny Carter and wife Mary Linda of Sunbury and Dr. Wilbur B. ''Bill'' Carter Jr. and wife Melissa of Chapel Hill, N.C; three sisters, Carmen Hilton of Suffolk, Virginia Snipes of Portsmouth and Helen Taylor of Virginia Beach; two brothers, Robert Rountree of Laurel, Md., and Herbert D. Rountree of L Gatesville; six grandchildren, L John L. Smith III, Arlette' Carter, Joanna Oxindine, Jeannette L Moore, Erin Carter and Meredith Carter.

A funeral will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. in Damascus Christian Church by the Rev. Forrest Guth- rie. Entombment will follow in the church cemetery. Friends may join the family Friday from 7 to 8:30 p.m. in Miller Funeral Home, Gatesville, and other times at the residence.

ObituaryJan 21, 2008  OBITUARY: SUNBURY - Wilbur Brooks Carter Sr., 95, of the 400 block of Zion Road, died Saturday, Jan. 19, 2008, in Down East Health & Rehab, Gatesville. Mr. Carter was born in Gates County and was the son of the late John H. and Ludie W. Carter. A retired farmer, he had also in years past sold his goods at various farmer's markets throughout the area. A member of the first graduating class from Sunbury High School, he was a member of Damascus Christian Church, the Peanut Grower's Association, and was proclaimed a "Country Squire" by then North Carolina Gov. Kerr Scott. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife, Flora Rountree Carter in April 2002 after more than 63 years of marriage. Surviving are two daughters, Carole C. Smith and husband Jack of Gates and Alice C. Moore and husband Edward of Sunbury; two sons, John Carter and wife Mary Linda of Sunbury and Dr. William B. "Bill" Carter Jr. and wife Melissa of Carrboro, N.C; six grandchildren, John L. Smith III and wife Nadia, Arlette Lambert and husband Matt, Joanna Oxendine and husband Aaron, Jeannette Hollowell and husband John Wayne, Erin Carter and Meredith Carter; and three great-grandchildren, Joseph Howell, Linnea Hornung and Riley Hollowell. A funeral will be held Tuesday at 2 p.m. in the chapel of Miller Funeral Home, 304 Main St., Gatesville, by the Rev. Tracy Clayton and the Rev. Billy Presley. A private entombment will follow in Damascus Christian Church Cemetery. Friends may join the family today from 6 to 7:30 p.m. in the funeral home and all other times at the home of Alice and Edward Moore, 260 Gray Road, Sunbury. Memorial contributions may be made to the Gates County Historical Society for the benefit of the Sunbury School Project or the Gates County Rescue Squad.
