ObituaryOct 31, 1861  OBITUARY: In Cornish, N. H. October 16th, Mrs. Mariah Hyde, wife of Mr. Darwin Kenyon, and granddaughter of Dr. Oliver Baker, aged 24 years. Some weeks before her death, Mrs. Kenyon left home to attend upon her brother, Henry P. Hyde who was a volunteer in the 1st Vermont Regiment. He was taken with malignant typhoid fever at Newport News, and was brought to Brattleboro on the return of the Regiment. There his sister joined him. Soon after he was able to be removed home, the devoted sister was attacked by the same disease, and her system, already much weakened by anxiety and care, soon yielded to its severity. A large circle of friends mourn her early death.

She received her education at the academy at Meriden, and was employed for some time subsequently as a teacher, in which capacity she was unusually successful. She sustained a very high character wherever she was known. Her afflicted friends are sustained by the hope that their loss is her exceeding gain.

They were married March 7, 1861 in Windsor, Vermont. Darwin Kenyon died of fever December 20, 1861."

Published in the October 31, 1861 issue of Brattleboro's Vermont Phoenix.3
