She was born in Northfield, July 9, 1924, the daughter of Edwin & Hattie (Stevens) Sprague. She attended Brookfield Schools.
She married Gerald Winston Knowles on November 11, 1941, in Brookfield. Mr. Knowles died January 3, 2000. Recently she had been living in Barre with family.
Florence worked on the family farm in Brookfield and later, did housekeeping for some of the area nursing homes.
She enjoyed playing cards, collecting cow memorabilia, loved to cook, tending her flower garden and spending time with her family.
Survivors include her daughter Rosa Johnson of Barre; two sons, Paul Knowles of Milton, Quentin Knowles of Topsham; one step daughter, Phyliss Hussey of Barre; several grandchildren, great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to her husband Gerald, she is predeceased by her son, Winston Knowles; siblings, Hazel Hebert and Robert Sprague.
Visitation will be held Monday, March 23, from 3 p.m. until the start of the funeral service at 4 p.m. at the Kingston Funeral Home, 35 Slate Avenue, in Northfield.
Burial will take place later this spring in the Brookfield Center Cemetery.

Mr. Knowles was a logger and farmer his entire working career.

He married Carol Stover in Brookfield on June 7, 1980.

He enjoyed woodworking, attending garage sales and NASCAR racing.

Survivors include his wife, Carol Knowles of Brookfield; his mother, Florence Knowles of Barre; three sons, Ricky Lee Knowles of Barre; Scott Knowles of Franklin; and Steven Knowles of Barre; two daughters, Lisa Burns of Barre and Lori Knowles of Orlando, Fla; two stepchildren, Theresa Lovejoy of Montpelier and Glenn Stover of Barre; one brother, Paul Knowles of Fla; two sisters, Rosa Johnson of Barre and Phyllis Hussy of Barre; numerous grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; and a few nieces and nephews.

There are no calling hours. A graveside service will be conducted Thursday, Nov. 30, at 11 a.m. at the Brookfield Center Cemetery in Brookfield. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to Central Vermont Home Health and Hospice, 600 Granger Road, Berlin, VT 05641. Kingston Funeral Home in Northfield assisted in the arrangements.

Born Nov. 12, 1926, in Brookfield, he was the son of Herbert and Gladys (Williams) Knowles. He attended schools in Brookfield and Williamstown.

From 1942 to 1945, he served in the United States Merchant Marines and with the United States Army from November 1945 to April 1947, stationed in Germany.

On Nov. 15, 1947, he married Lucille Alexander in Williamstown. Following their marriage, they made their home in Williamstown before moving to Plainfield in 1958.

In earlier years, he had worked on area farms and later was a heavy equipment operator for the Cooley Paving Company and for Pike Industries.

A member of the Grace United Methodist Church of Plainfield, his other memberships included the Plainfield Fire Department, where he had been Assistant Chief; the Plainfield Firemen's Club; Fire Warden for the Town of Plainfield; Wyoming Masonic Lodge 80 of Plainfield; Barre Council 22 R and SM; King Solomon Chapter 7 RAM; Mount Zion 9 K.T; and Mount Sinai Shrine Temple 3, all of Montpelier; Kingsbury Chapter 77 OES of Plainfield; and the Montpelier American Legion Post 3.

He enjoyed hunting, fishing, cooking, and card playing and was an avid TV game show and western fan.

Survivors include his wife, Lucille Knowles of Plainfield; two daughters, Janet Seiferth of Richford and Marlene Morris and her husband, Terry of Lake Stevens, Wash; two grandsons, John Seiferth and James Seiferth; a sister, Zita Champney of South Royalton; and nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his son-in-law, Rev. Calvin Seiferth; a sister, Ramona Hardaker; and three brothers, Alfred Knowles, Gerald Knowles, and Leon Knowles.

His funeral service will be held on Thursday, July 8, 2006, at 10 a.m. in the Hooker and Whitcomb Funeral Home, 7 Academy St., Barre. Interment will follow in the Vermont Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Randolph Center.

There are no calling hours.
