ObituaryJun 13, 1925  OBITUARY: JAMES O. PREBLE; James O. Preble passed away at his home on upper Madison street, Friday about seven o'clock, after a lingering illness of serveral months, during which time he had been tenderly cared for by his daughter, Miss Annie, who has been th home-maker since the death of Mrs. Preble in November, 1920. Also by the three sons who reside in this place. Mr. Preble was born in Greenbush, March 12, 1847 and was the last surviving of five children of Benjamin O. and Anna (Inman) Preble. On November 24, 1863, he enlisted in Co. G, 2nd Maine cavalry and was discharged at Barraneas, Florida, December 6, 1865. August 19, 1869, he was united in marriage to Hannah B. Sibley of Burlington. Here their early life was passed on a farm. To this union were born 10 children. Mr. Preble was loving father, kind friend and good citizen. A man of retiring disposition. He was a member of N. A. Lester, Burlington, William C., Annie A., Norris A., and Charles A., all of this place, besides twelve grandchildren and six great grandchildren. Funeral services were held from the late home Sunday afternoon, conducted by Rev. E. Lewis Wall. The interment was in the family lot at Forest Hill cemetery.

ObituaryNov 30, 1919  OBITUARY: Mrs. James O. Preble; Mrs. Hannah Sibley, wife of James O. Preble, passed away at her home on Madison street Saturday evening after a long and painful illness. Mrs. Preble was born in Burlington, Maine August 19, 1852, and was the youngest of eight children of William and Azuba (Pushor) Sibley. Here she was educated and passed her early life. In August, 1869 she was united in marriage to J. O. Preble, and to this union were born ten children, eight of whom grew to adult age, and two died in infancy, while the oldest daughter, Azuba Preble Sibley, died last May. The children now living are: William C., Norris A., Annie A., and Charlie A.. of this place; Lester J. of Burlington, John H. and Orrin B. of Springfield Mass. She is also survived by one sister, Mrs. Joseph Buck of Galvin, Wash. Mrs. Preble was a great home lover a kind devoted wife and an excellent mother, always teaching her children the right way of living. While not a member of any church she was a Christian at heart, and a conscientious worker in all good works and deeds. She was a charter member of the Pythian Sister Lodge of Madison in which she was a devoted worker and loyal member. Mr. and Mrs. Preble moved to this place 19 years ago last April. This summer they moved into their new home where they observed their 50th wedding anniversary. The first week in September Mrs. Preble was taken ill and although all that medical skill and kind loving care could do was done, it was of no avail. The funeral services were held from her late home Tuesday afternoon and were conducted by Rev. E. W. Webber, assisted by Rev. William Wood. The Pythian Sisters attended in a body. The flowers were many and beautiful, silent testimonials of the love and esteem in which she was held. The bearers were Evan Adams, Earl Cox, Frank Flanders and Thomas Moore. The interment was in the family lot in Forest Hill cemetery.

ObituaryDec 17, 1939  OBITUARY: WILLIAM CLARENCE PREBLE passed away at his home in Burlington, VT about 7:15 p.m. last Saturday 18 Dec. 1939, following an illness which resulted in the forming of a tumor on the brain.

Funeral services for Mr. Preble were held Monday afternoon at the home in Burlington. William C. Preble was born in Burlington, July 13, 1874, the son of James O. and Hannah D. Preble, and there spent his early years. During his youth he was employed as a woodsman. In 1898 he came to Madison and was employed in the construction of the local G.N.P. Co. plant. A few years later, Mr. Preble entered the Indian Spring mill as a millwright and in a short time was engaged as master mechanic of the mill. He held this position for 18 years, being obliged to retire from active duty due to an injury he received while about his work. His retirement was about 14 years ago and soon after leaving the mill he returned to his former home in Burlington where he had been carrying on the farm since. During his stay in Madison, “Bill”, as he was always known here, constructed the house in which Maurice Nute now lives, and did various other construction jobs about town. He lived for many years on Garfield Street where John Otis resides, and later built the new house where Fred Brackett now lives, on the corner of Madison Avenue and Houghton Street.

Bill served the town as a police officer for a number of years and was a member of the local fire department for 17 years. He was a member of the Keystone Lodge No. 109, K. of P. While in Madison, Mr. Preble made and always held a host of friends who mourn their loss.

Surviving are four brothers and one sister, Lester J., Charlie A., Annie A. Preble, all of Burlington; John H. of Brookline, MA, and Orrin B. of West Springfield. Interment was at Mount Repose Cemetery in Burlington.

She was the daughter of the late Hannah Sibley Preble and James O. Preble. At the time of her death all the family were ill except Miranda and Flossie, who cared for the sick ones tenderly and faithfully. A kind neighbor and loving wife and mother, she will be greatly missed in the community. The bereaved ones have the sympathy of a host of friends. Rev. Carrie Rideout spoke words of comfort.
