He was born in Otter River, on July 19, 1923, the son of the late Frank and the late Honora (Conners) Smith.

Harry grew up in Otter River and was educated in Otter River. He was a veteran of World War II serving in the United States Army 82nd Airborne.

He worked as a butcher for the former M&M Supermarket and Polly and Bob's Market in Athol, he then worked for Heywood Wakefield in Gardner for several years and later at the J.F. McElwain Shoe Shop in Athol.

He was well known for his catering in the local area and was a bartender at Traverse Street for many years as well as several other local establishments.

He was an avid Red Sox fan, loved his dogs and especially loved sharing his food with friends and neighbors.

He was a member of the Athol American Legion, the Athol V.F.W., the Franco American Club and the Otter River Sportsmen Club.

He leaves four daughters, Jeanne Smith of Key West, Fla., Dianne Russell and her husband Jeff of Norfolk, Va., Karen Smith and her husband Clay Qualters of Orange, Debbie Manning and her husband Michael of Northborough; one son, Gregory T. Smith of Athol; one brother, Charlie Smith of New Haven, Conn; four grandchildren, Kevin Manning, Colleen Manning, Patrick Manning, Angela Deveneau; two great-grandchildren, Connor Manning, Chelsea Deveneau and many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his wife, Norma (Nylander) Smith, by seven brothers, Frank Smith, Bert Smith, Donald Smith, Robert Smith, Roland Smith, Arthur Smith, George Smith and by two sisters, Margaret Long and Kay Fallon.

Graveside services will be held Saturday, Feb. 5, at 4:15 p.m. in Silver Lake Cemetery, Silver Lake Street, Athol.

Calling hours will be held Saturday, Feb. 5, from 2:30 - 4 p.m. at the Fiske Funeral Home, 1356 Main St., Athol.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorial contributions be made in his memory to the American Heart Association, 20 Speen St., Framingham, Mass. 01701 or to the American Cancer Society, New England Division, 30 Speen St., Framingham, Mass. 01701.

Her husband of 54 years, Arthur J. Smith, died in 1984. She leaves three daughters, Shirley L. Murray of Winchendon and Janice M. Duplessis and Sally A. Frisch, both of Otter River; a sister, Loretta M. (Conti) Davidowicz of Grafton; 10 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Three brothers, Ernest, Edmond and Edward DesBois, and three sisters, Lena Lucier, Viola Petitti and Cecile Yakuben, predeceased her. She was born in Worcester, daughter of Joseph T. and Exilda (Roy) DesBois.

Mrs. Smith worked several years as an upholsterer for Juvenile Furniture of Gardner, retiring in 1969. Previously, she worked as a sander for Temple Stuart Co., Baldwinville. She was a member of St. Vincent de Paul Church of Baldwinville, the Firemen's Auxiliary and the Templeton Golden Agers. She was a member and past president of the Catholic Women's Club.

The funeral will be held on Tuesday, Dec. 18, from Boucher Funeral Home, 110 Nichols St., Gardner, with a Mass at 11 a.m. in St. Vincent de Paul Church, 1 Forest St., Baldwinville. Burial will be in Greenlawn Cemetery. A calling hour will be held from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 18, in the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the Templeton Rescue Squad, PO Box 4, Baldwinville, MA 01436, or to the Baldwinville Nursing Home Activity Fund, 51 Hospital road, Baldwinville, MA 01436.

ObituaryDec 19, 1991  OBITUARY: EAST TEMPLETON - Donald E. Brown, 77, of 5 South Main St. died yesterday in Henry Heywood Memorial Hospital, Gardner, following an illness.

He leaves his wife, Madalyn J. (Smith) Brown; two sons, Richard E. Brown of Gardner and Clayton H. Brown of Baldwinville; a daughter, Donna L. Sans of Baldwinville; a brother, Arthur H. Brown of Roswell, N.M; a sister, Marion L. Dube of Gardner; 13 grandchildren; and a great-grandson. A son, Gordon L. Brown of Phillipston, died in 1972. He was born in Keene, N.H., son of Leon H. and Clara A. (Crehan) Brown, and was educated in Gardner schools. Mr. and Mrs. Brown were married September 19, 1936.

Mr. Brown was a retired captain in the East Templeton Fire Department, on which he served many years. He also had worked for 29 years at the Baldwinville Products Division of Erving Paper Mills, retiring in 1979.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. tomorrow in Smith Funeral Home, 69 Vernon St., Gardner. The Rev. Freda Maier will officiate. Burial will be in Crystal Lake Cemetery. Calling hours at the funeral home will be 7 to 9 tonight. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Templeton Fire Department Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 4, Baldwinville, 01436.
