ObituaryJul 12, 2012  OBITUARY: Visitation will be on Saturday, July 14th, 2:00 – 3:30 pm at Cabot Funeral Home in Woodstock, followed by a graveside service at 4 pm at Riverside Cemetery for Scott W. Dudley, Sr., of Woodstock, who passed away on July 3, 2012, at the age of 88 at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center following a courageous effort to recovery from surgery.

He was born on March 15, 1924, in Orleans, the son of Eugene P. and Beatrice M. (McGoff) Dudley. He attended Orleans, Morrisville and Woodstock public schools, graduating in 1942 from Woodstock High School. He was an accomplished athlete who played both baseball – making the varsity team as a freshman – and basketball. After graduation, he worked at the Woodstock Pharmacy.
In 1943, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served during World War II with the Marines as a hospital corpsman in the South Pacific. He participated in the invasion of Guam and later served as a member of the Construction Battalion (CBs). While on Guam, he contracted malaria. Following his service overseas, he was enrolled in the Navy V12 program in which he attended Princeton University and Middlebury College. After three years of service, he was honorably discharged in 1946 and returned to Woodstock. Following the war, he attended the University of Vermont and later took a position as paymaster for Cone Automatic Machine Co. in Windsor.

He was married in December 1950 to Elizabeth Stevens of N. Abington, Massachusetts, and re-married in 1956 to Anna E. (Wolstencroft) Watson of Woodstock.

He worked as a bookkeeper for Gerrish Motors, Inc. in Woodstock. Following that, he was employed by Woodstock Resort Corporation in various positions at Mt. Tom/Suicide Six ski areas and at Woodstock Country Club (WCC), including as manager of WCC. He later worked for Woodstock Country School and the Vermont Workshop before joining F.A. Richmond Inc. as a bookkeeper starting in 1984 until his retirement in 1997. He also served for a period as the Treasurer of both the Town and Village of Woodstock. He was a member of the Ora E. Paul American Legion Post #24, the Woodstock Lodge #31 of the F & AM (Masons), and the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

He is survived by a daughter, Cheryl A. Dudley of Woodstock and her son Benjamin Wodiska of Rehoboth, Delaware; a son, Scott W. Dudley, Jr. and wife Andrea and their children Samuel and Anna, all of Olathe, Kansas; a brother, W. Bruce Dudley of Woodstock; a sister, Priscilla (Diette) Salem of Bennington, Vermont; and a brother, Frederic Diette of Berndardsville, New Jersey. He is also survived by a number of nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by siblings, Patricia (Diette) Courtney, Philip Diette, and Alan Diette.

ObituaryJul 25, 2013  OBITUARY: WOODSTOCK - Bruce passed away on Thursday, July 18, 2013, in the Woodstock Terrace, after a short battle with cancer.

He was born in St. Johnsbury to Beatrice (McGoff) Dudley and Eugene P. Dudley on Jan. 18, 1923.

Bruce attended Orleans, Morrisville and Woodstock public schools and graduated in 1940 from Woodstock High School. Following graduation, he attended Concord, N.H. Business College for six months, and then worked in multiple First National Stores until enlisting in the Army Air Corps in August 1941. He did his basic training at Daniel Field, Augusta, Ga. In Feb. 1942, he was shipped to Brisbane, Australia, and subsequently to Cairns, Australia, and Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea. In Dec. 1942, he was flown back to Wright- Patterson Air Base in Dayton, Ohio, and then went to the Douglas Aircraft factory in Santa Monica, Calif., to evaluate the production and shipment of C-47 and other aircraft parts to the South Pacific. Upon his return to Brisbane, Australia, he was transferred to the headquarters of the Far East Air Service Command and stationed in Hollandia, Dutch New Guinea, and then in Manila, Philippines. In Aug. 1945, he was flown to Greensboro, N.C., and then honorably discharged in September as a master sergeant. At the time of his discharge, Bruce was recommended for promotion to warrant officer, as well as a direct commission. He was awarded the Asiatic- Pacific Medal/Ribbon with 4 battle stars, American Defense Medal, Philippine Liberation Medal/Ribbon with 1 battle star, Good Conduct Medal, Presidential Unit citation, World War II Victory Medal, Vermont Veterans Service Medal and Vermont Distinguished Service Medal. In Dec. 1945, Bruce began working at the Woodstock National Bank as a "teller trainee". During the summers of 1959-61, he attended the ABA's Stonier Graduate School of Banking at Rutgers, The State University and completed courses at home, graduating in 1961. After several promotions, he was elected President/ CEO and a Director of the Bank in 1963, retiring in 1988 after 42 years of service. He then served for one year as a Trust Officer for the Howard Bank of Burlington.

On Sept. 10, 1949, Bruce married Faye Ida Ambrose, daughter of Harrison and Irene (Clark) Ambrose and they had three children.

During his tenure at the Woodstock National Bank, he was President of the Vermont Bankers Association; President of the Rotary Club; Director of the Woodstock Union High School; Treasurer of the Woodstock Country Club; Chairman of the Board of the Windsor Central School District; Treasurer of the Woodstock Public Health and VNA; Trustee of Woodstock Foundation, Inc; Village Trustee of Public Funds; one of three Town Trustees of Public Funds; Trustee, Vestryman and Verger of St. James Episcopal Church; Former Chairman of the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston's Shareholder Advisory Committee; member of The Woodstock Masonic Lodge, Chapter, Vermont Commandery; member of the Ora Paul Post, American Legion and a Shriner for 50 years.

He is survived by his two daughters, Christine (Dudley) Gilbert and husband, James, of Brookfield, and Kathryn Dudley of Woodstock; son, Bruce Dane Dudley and wife, Susan, of Wethersfield, Conn; sister, Priscilla (Diette) Salem and husband, Charles, of Bennington; brother, Frederic Diette of Bernardsville, N.J; brother, Leslie Dudley and wife, Suzanne, of Key West, Fla; brother, Dwight Dudley of Orleans; and sister, Betsy (Dudley) Curtis of Derby Line. He also is survived by grandchildren, Alexander Gilbert of Brookfield, Kevin, John and Katherine Dudley of Wethersfield, Conn., and Jessica (Gilbert) Carpenter and husband, Nicholas, and great-grandchildren, Nolan and Blake of South Royalton; plus many nieces and nephews.


He was predeceased by his wife, Faye Ambrose Dudley, who passed away in February; and siblings, Scott Dudley, Philip Diette, Patricia (Diette) Courtney, and Alan Diette.

A Memorial Service will be held Sunday, Aug. 18, 2013, at 2 p.m. at the St. James' Church, On the Green in Woodstock.

At Bruce's request, his body was donated to the Anatomical Gifts program at Dartmouth Medical School.

ObituaryMay 13, 2019  OBITUARY: Beverly Louise Alexander went home to be with her Savior on May 4, 2019 at age 96. She was
born on October 26, 1922 to Leon and Beatrice Stearns Turnbull in Orleans, Vermont. She was
raised in Orleans at the Turnbull family home, graduating from Orleans High School, class of
1940. At OHS Bev enjoyed sports and was captain of the girls' basketball team. In winters she
spent many happy hours skating on the outdoors ice rink, an activity she continued into
adulthood. In summers Bev would stay at the family camp on Lake Willoughby, becoming a
strong swimmer.
In early 1942 Beverly married Edward Sears Alexander, a native of Irasburg. He was class of
1939 at Orleans High School. Bev left the U. of Vermont to marry him while he was a cadet at
Norwich University. Edward graduated from Norwich in March of 1943, was commissioned as a
2nd Lieutenant 90 days later. He was then sent to England where he served nearly three years in
the U.S. Army during World War 11. Bev was able to be with him for several months before he
was shipped overseas.
Three children were born to Edward and Beverly Alexander: Stephen (Sandra) of Bremerton,
Washington and their four children, the late Nathan, Rachel, Andrew and Sarah; James
(Beverley) of Berkshire, Vermont and their two children, Jo Laggis and James; and Mary Louise
Harper of Ennis, Texas and her three children, Rob, Kate and George. She also leaves numerous
great-grandchildren. While her children were growing up in Orleans, Bev was always supportive
of her children’s activities, volunteering at their school events, chaperoning their field trips and
attending their sports events.
Bev was a lifelong member of the Orleans United Church. She contributed by teaching Sunday
School, chairing chicken pie suppers and she was always the first responder when help was
needed. She was a lifelong member of the Orleans Country Club, where she played golf regularly
in the Summer months and frequently served on the board of of the club. She played in the
Women’s Twilight League into her early 80s.
Bev enjoyed reading and watching special sports events on TV such as the annual Masters Golf
Tournament. Together with Edward, many Saturday evenings were spent playing duplicate
bridge. Bev also enjoyed assisting Edward with the business of the Orleans Cemetery
Association.
Beginning in about 1983, upon Edward’s retirement from the Howard National Bank, Beverly
traveled south with him for the winter months to Homestead, Florida where they were blessed
with many snowbird friends. The yearly sojourns to south Florida came to an end shortly after the
passing of Edward in 2002, after a marriage of 60+ years. The Bel-Aire retirement facility in
Newport, Vermont eventually became her home, where she received excellent care and made
many more friends with both residents and staff.
Bev’s family and friends will always remember her as a strong woman of faith, “immovable and
steadfast.” (1 Corinthians 15:58) She knew that nothing she did for the Lord (or others) was ever
useless or in vain. She was able to be positive with everyone in all circumstances. She is free of
pain, in heaven with Jesus and reunited with her husband and her father and mother. There will be
