Researcher's Note* Edwin Frank Tuttle was said to have been a pupil of his future wife, Coletta in Uxbridge, Ma. It appears that he and Coletta first lived in Uxbridge, during the years 1898-1904, moved to Franklin, Massachusetts, United States and lived there during the years 1904-1908. They then moved to Woonsocket, RI in 1908 and lived there until 1920. He became involved in the insurance business, working in Woonsocket, RI. In 1920 he bought a farm on Hartford Ave, Bellingham, Ma. on the Charles River, which he called "CLOVERLAWN-ON-THE-CHARLES". The farm consisted of about 15 acres. Here he grew corn, raised chickens, goats, cows and pigs. He also had a few beehives for making honey. The house was originally a shoe factory, which was remodeled by his four sons. The property also contained a sandpit which provided income from local concrete firms, who frequently acquired sand from there. The property went to his son Stanly after his and Coletta's death and was sold in 1996 to a developer. He was involved in politics in Woonsocket, RI, where he founded and was prominent in the "Bull Moose" Party. He led the Rhode Island Campaign for Theodore Roosevelt in 1912, running as a 'progressive', "Bull Moose" candidate for President of the United States. There is a picture of him with Teddy in Woonsocket, RI., during the 1912 campaign. He was later one of the founding fathers and Admiral of the Bellingham Navy Yard, a legend of long standing in Bellingham, Massachusetts, United States. He was Bellingham's Town Moderator 1926-1930, ERA Administrator 1934-1935 and served as Democratic Town Chairman.6

Researcher's Note* David was an avid baseball player/fan. He was the catcher for the 'Bellingham Farmers'. He tried to get his brother 'Ted involved as a pitcher, since Ted would practice with his brother David to 'hone his catcher skills. David and Ted got along quite well as young brothers go. Both were strong swimmers and were determined to teach their younger brothers, Alden and Stanly, how to swim. Ted and Dave took Alden and Stanly out in a boat [on Silver Lake, probably] and threw them overboard, forcing them to swim ashore. David graduated in the 1919 class of Woonsocket High School. He was a classmate and friend of Mary E. Graham, who later [1929] would become the wife of his brother, Ted. He started his work career with R. P. Smith and Son, an insurance agency in Woonsocket, RI, as a part-time employee on Dec. 1, 1917, when he was 16 years old. He was named Secretary of R. P. Smith in 1938, and, added the title of vice president in 1964. He retired in 1971, after 54 years of service to R. P. Smith and Sons. Later in life Dave became involved in politics, probably through the urging of his father, who was always involved in the political scene. He was Bellingham's first accountant in the years 1926-1935. At one time he was the Town Clerk for Bellingham, Massachusetts, United States. He served on the Bellingham Board of Education and the school building committee. The ball field near the school was named in his honor, since he did the most to develop a raw field into a baseball field for the children of Bellingham. He was a great advocator of getting kids involved in sports at an early age.4

Researcher's Note* Edwin Frank Tuttle was called by his nickname, Ted, which his father attached probably because of his great admiration for Teddy Roosevelt. Edwin (Ted) Frank Tuttle left high school after one year (c1915) and went to work as a draftsman at the Woonsocket Machine and Press, working on World War I military orders. He worked for a while at Brewster's Garage in Worcester, Massachusetts, United States as an auto mechanic. He continued his education at the Woonsocket, Commercial College, where he became a good male stenographer and writer. In the mid 1920's, he took a job with the United Fruit Co. in Santa Marta, Columbia, SA. He was office manager and paymaster until laid off one and half years later. While in Columbia he corresponded with Mary E. Graham of Woonsocket, RI. She was a classmate of his brother David L. Tuttle. As the depression was setting in, and after his marriage to Mary, he took a job with the Starret Brothers Construction Co. on the Empire State Building (1929-1931). He worked in a clerical position, overseeing work schedules and adherence to specifications. Ted and Mary lived in an apartment in Newark, NJ. Mary's sister, Agnes, had an apartment next door to theirs, since Ted was supporting them both. Ted found work at a chemical company in Clifton or Fairlawn, NJ. In the 1930's, Ted and Mary moved to Fairlawn. Ted quit this job (c1942) over a dispute with some type of discovery which he felt he was not rewarded. He then took a job with a paint company, Maas & Waldstein of Belleville or Newark, NJ. Ted and Mary then moved to Woodridge, NJ, renting a house on the corner of Highland Ave. and Twelfth St. As World War II was winding down in 1945, Ted and Mary bought their first house in Hasbrouck Heights, NJ at 147 Washington Place. They purchased this house on Dec. 7, 1945 for $5,500 from the Stringfield family.3

ObituaryMar 23, 1999  OBITUARY: Alden Parker Tuttle, 92, who taught at the University [of Massachusetts] for 42 years, died March 22 [1999] in the Linda Manor Extended Care Facility in Leeds. He taught in what is now the Plant and Soil Sciences Department in the Stockbridge School of Agriculture, retiring as an assistant professor in 1972. He was honored as an outstanding professor at Stockbridge in 1970. During the 1930s, he was an assistant coach in Stockbridge's football program. Born in Franklin, he graduated from Milford High School. He was a 1928 graduate of the former Massachusetts Agricultural College and received a master's degree from Penn State two years later. Following his retirement from the University, he served on the board of the Retired Service Volunteers Program and for 20 years volunteered at the Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Leeds as a horticulture therapy specialist. He had been involved in several volunteer organizations, including the Small Schools Tournament in boys basketball, the Boy Scouts, national fraternal organizations and with the 4-H Club. He was a supervisor of the 4-H building for the annual Three County Fair in Northampton. He had been a member of the First Congregational Church in Amherst for more than 60 years. His wife, Marjorie Louise (Daniels) Tuttle, predeceased him. He is survived by his daughter, Deborah Jacobs of Leeds; two sons, Alden P. Tuttle Jr. of Indiana and Jonathan G. Tuttle of Shutesbury; and a granddaughter. Burial services have not be finalized, as he has donated his body to the Anatomical Gifts Program of the UMass Medical School in Worcester. had been a horticultural therapy volunteer at the Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Leeds, Massachusetts, United States for 20 years. He will eventually be buried in Wildwood Cemetary in Amherst. A memorial service will be held on the afternoon of Saturday, May 1 at the First Congregational Church. Memorial gifts may be made to the Not Bread Alone Soup Kitchen, 14 Boltwood Avenue, Amherst 01002.

He retired from active employment in 1979 after 53 years of service at the age of 70. He continued his service as a vice president and member of the board of directors up to 1992. Stanly & Louise resided at Rte 140, Mendon, Massachusetts, United States until about 1989, when they moved to a condominium in Hopedale, Massachusetts, United States. Louise moved later to Worcester, Massachusetts, United States when Stanly was diagnosed with Alzheimer disease. He died in early 1997 and a funeral service was held for him at the church of the Unitarian Congregation of Mendon & Uxbridge, Mendon, Massachusetts, United States. After his father's death in 1959, he looked after the affairs of his mother, Colletta A. Parker Tuttle, until her death in 1971. The parent's farm went to him upon his mother's death and he just couldn't bring himself to selling until 1996, as his illness was getting worse. Researcher's Note* Mary Elizabeth Graham graduated from Woonsocket High School, Woonsocket, RI in 1919. She was a classmate of David L. Tuttle, brother of Edwin F. Tuttle. Both Mary and Margaret became teachers and taught in East Blackstone & Millerville schools in and around Blackstone, Massachusetts, United States during the period 1921- June 1929. Mary had gotten married in April 1929, and moved to New Jersey that summer, since Ted, her husband, had taken a job with the Starret Brothers for work on the Empire State Building. Mary, later [about 1952-1958], taught school at St. Nicholas School, Passaic, NJ, a Parochial School, since she did not have a NJ Teaching Certificate to teach in the public school system. She took a teaching course at the University of Rhode Island in July-August 1957 and received an "A" grade. In the early 1960's she taught third grade at Corpus Christi School in Hasbrouck Heights, NJ. She retired in the late 60's. She sold her house in Hasbrouck Heights, NJ in1971 for $25,000. The house was sold to Alex and Phylis Irwin Fass. She and her sisters were all good piano players, Mary playing 'by ear'. She tried to pass this on to her children with poor results. Mary attempted to contact her father's family in Ireland. She corresponded with a Rose Grehan, Main St., Granard, County Longford, IRELAND.3
