They had one daughter (Grace who never married) who was born in 1833 or 1834 and died in March of 1899 at Pittsfield, Massachusetts and one son (Charles) born February 22, 1836 and died Jan. 2, 1897 at Hudson, New York. Both children were born in Stockbridge, Berkshire County, Massachusetts and both are buried in the F 11 plot at the Hudson City Cemetery.

Charles (Charlie) married Helena Willett Freeland on Jan. 4, 1866 at the bride's home in Greenport, Columbia County, New York and gave his mother three granddaughters (Grace Coffey Alger who married Louis William Groat, Helena Willett Alger, who married Frank Farrand, and Sarah Palmer Alger who never married) and one grandson (Charles Francis Alger who married Elizabeth Charlotte Wirth) before his wife died at 32 years of age of pneumonia at Hudson, Columbia County, New York on Feb. 5, 1879 at a house on Allen Street first purchased about 1876 by Mrs. Sarah Palmer Alger for $10,500 from the estate of Nathan Chamberlain, a former bank president and first owner of the house. In 1881, Mrs. Sarah Palmer Alger turned the house over to her widowed son while retaining the right to live there during her lifetime in a specified part of the house. She made a provision that if she outlived her son, the house was to go to three named 'beloved grandchildren' by her son and his deceased wife. She actually did outlive her son by about eight weeks and so ownership of the house went to her three named grandchildren by Charles Alger but bypasssed her oldest grandchild, Grace Coffey Alger. This may have been because Grace had inherited $5,000 in trust from the estate of Sarah's divorced (and remarried with a daughter) husband Charles Coffey Alger who died in 1874 at his summer house at New London, Connecticut.

Sarah and Charles Coffey Alger were divorced early in 1868 after 36 years of marriage as Charles lost interest in his wife as his wealth increased. About 1861 the couple became estranged while living in a mansion at Newburgh, New York but it took almost seven years for Sarah to agree to, and to go through the process of, a divorce. Charles then married Marie Louise Molt (probably born at Stowe, Vermont) who was about 30 years younger than himself very shortly after the divorce and they had a daughter Lucile who was born at Norwich, New London County, Connecticut on October 10, 1870. Lucile Alger's birth certificate says that she was the child of C. C. Alger and was the second child of the unnamed mother. (In 2014 I found out that the first child of Charles and Marie was Marie Alger, born about January 1869 at London, England and probably died before April 1869 also at London, England. The child Marie Alger was baptized in January of 1869 at a Church of England baptism in London.)

Lucile never married and died at her 110 acre estate at Great Neck, Long Island on Christmas Eve of 1936. She left most of her earthly goods to her partner of 25 years Louise Nathalie Grace of the fabulously wealthy Grace family.

Sarah outlived her husband, his second wife, Marie Louise Molt, and her own only son. She is buried in a family plot (purchased when her daughter-in-law died in 1879) at the Hudson City Cemetery at Hudson, New York but C. C. Alger and his second wife are buried at the Yantic Cemetery in Norwich, Connecticut.

A possible clue to who some of Sarah's birth family might have been, besides her father being William Palmer and Sarah being born in White Plains, New York in 1809 or 1810, is that her son Charlie's second daughter, Helena Willett Alger who married Frank Farrand, named her second son Palmer CHATTERTON Farrand. The Battle of White Plains in the Revolutionary War was actually fought on a farm on a hill owned by the Chatterton family. However, I have never found a link for this part of my family to the Chatterton family.2

ObituaryNov 6, 1886  OBITUARY: According to her tombstone she was born about 1839 but there is a record in Vermont birth records of a Maria Louisa Molt who was born in 1836 at Burlington, Chittenden, Vermont to a Mr. Molt with no name of the mother listed. I tend to think the tombstone year of birth is incorrect and that the Vermont birth record is probably more reliable. I found this information online on 12 May 2012.

Her father was married at least twice and was of German extraction. Her tombstone inscription says that she was 47 at time of death.

She was the second wife of Charles Coffey Alger (born 4 July 1809 and died 13 July 1874) and she was about 30 years younger than he was. They first had a daughter Marie Alger who was baptized on January 15, 1869 at All Soul's, St. Marylebone, London, England. There are two baptismal entries on familysearch.org. One gives the date of birth as January 5, 1868 and the other as January 5, 1869. It seems to me that the 1869 date for birth is correct since there is a birth record for a Marie Alger for the first quarter of 1869. There is also a death record for Marie Alger during the first quarter of 1869 at Marylebone, London, England. Thus it seems that the child lived a maximum of less than three months.

The second daughter was Lucile Alger who was born October 10, 1870 at Norwich, New London County, Connecticut and died unmarried December 24, 1936 at her estate at 100 Beach Road in Saddle Rock, Great Neck, Long Island, New York. Lucile's birth certificate in Norwich, New London County, Connecticut says that she was the second child born to the mother (who is only listed with her maiden name of Molt with the father of the child being listed as C. C. Alger). Marie died in Hanover, Germany on November 3, 1886 of a stoppage of the heart and was buried 20 days later at the Yantic Cemetery at, or near, Norwich, New London County, Connecticut, as the widow of C. C. Alger.

C. C. Alger (Charles Coffey Alger) had managed to secure a divorce from his first wife, Sarah Palmer, in the first part of 1868. Sarah Palmer Alger outlived both her husband and his second wife and Sarah died at Hudson, New York in February of 1897. Sarah Palmer (daughter of William Palmer) and C. C. Alger had a daughter Grace Alger who died unmarried in March of 1899 and a son Charles Alger (who was the widower of Helena Willett Freeland) who died January 2, 1897. Charles Alger left three daughters and a son. The daughters were Grace Coffey Alger, the wife of Louis William Groat, Helena Willett Alger, the wife of Frank Farrand, and Miss Sarah Palmer Alger who died unmarried. The son was Charles Francis Alger who left a son (an only child) Carl Wirth Alger.

Grace died in 1899 at Massachusetts at a home for the aged and her brother Charles Alger died at Hudson, Columbia County, New York on January 2, 1897. (He was my ancestor with his wife Helena Willett Freeland who died in February of 1879 with whom he had three daughters and one son.) Sarah Palmer Alger, the first wife of C. C. Alger, died about 8 weeks after her son at the Hudson, Columbia County, New York home on Allen Street where she and her widowed son lived with his children.

Lucile was the second child of her parents. The first child Marie Alger was born in London, England and died as an infant. (The child was baptized at a Church of England ceremony and her father is listed as Charles Coffy Alger.) I have never been able to find a marriage date for the second marriage of C. C. Alger to Marie Louise Molt and it is possible that they may have been married somewhere in Europe although both were citizens of the United States. Marie Louise Molt was about 30 years younger than her husband and he died in New London County at their summer home in July of 1874 when Lucile was 3 years old. Charles Coffey Alger left a very large estate to his second wife and their child Lucile in the form of a trust which was to end when their last child reached the age of 21. That child was Lucile as there were no children after her. Marie Louise Molt Alger (may have been born at Stowe, Vermont) died in 1886 on a trip to Germany but her body was brought back to Connecticut for burial).

Lucile's mother died when she was about 16 years old. Lucile never married and moved from Connecticut to New York as a young lady and decided to finally settle in Saddle Rock, one of the nine villages of Great Neck about 1900. There she built a home on ten acres that was added to when her partner Louise Nathalie Grace moved in. They purchased 100 more acres over time and added two wings on to the original house. They also built many large homes on the property where most of their poodles were housed (but the favorites lived in the house with them). Miss Lucile Alger died Christmas Eve of 1936 after the ladies decided to live apart after 25 years of living in the same house at the estate at 100 Beach Road in Saddle Rock. The will of Miss Alger left $5,000 to a former girlfriend who had married and moved to Paris and the rest to Miss Grace. Miss Grace died in February of 1954 at another home she then owned in Nassau County, New York. She left an estate of over ten million dollars. Her smallest bequest was to Carl Wirth Alger, a great nephew of the half blood of Miss Lucile Alger. The two ladies had befriended Carl as a child when he developed childhood diabetes. Louise Nathalie Grace left him $5,000 and a sterling or coin silver tea set with large A's on the serving pieces except for the tray which had a particular design on it.

Lucile Alger was cremated on December 26, 1936 at the Fresh Pond Crematory. It appears that the ashes were not placed in niches there and were probably taken by Louise Nathalie Grace.

ObituaryMay 19, 1825  OBITUARY: He was the twin of Nathaniel and they were the first born children of Lydia Hudson, the second wife of Jonathan Alger of Lyme, New London County, Connecticut, USA. He was a Quaker but his parents and siblings may not have been. He was also a spy for the British during the Revolutionary War, probably while he was living in New Brunswick, New Jersey. The First U. S. Census of 1790 find him living in New York State. Sometime after that (around 1796) he went to Canada and petitioned for land based on his services to the British during the American Revolutionary War and was awarded 200 acres where he had a farm. He had one son, Peter, and eight daughters. His wife was Sarah Locy or Lacy or Lucy and he may have married her in New York colony in 1768.

His twin brother Nathaniel followed him to Canada after the Revolutionary War was over. His brother, William B. Alger, born in 1748 in Lyme, Connecticut was a Lieutenant in the War on the Patriot side in Dutchess County, New York. His brother, Jonathan Alger, Jr.. born in 1750 at Lyme, Connecticut who married Deborah Garrison of Dutchess County, New York, signed the Oath of Loyalty to the rebel Patriot side in Dutchess County during the Revolutionary War. He moved to Vermont after the war was over. There were other younger siblings and older siblings of the half blood. I am descended from Levi Alger, one of the children of Jonathan Alger, Jr. and Deborah Garrison.
