ObituaryOct 6, 2009  OBITUARY: Raymond John Howrigan, 63, passed away suddenly on Sunday morning, Oct. 4, 2009, with his loving family at his side. He was born on June 16, 1946, in St. Albans, Vt. He was the second son of D. Francis and Neva Howrigan. Raymond married Mary Whiting at Saint Mary's Catholic Church on Dec. 10, 1977. Raymond is survived by his loving wife, Mary and their five children. He leaves his daughters, Liza and her husband Stephen Smith of Fairfield, and Nicole and her husband Kevin Gentile of Avon, Conn; and sons, Ryan and his fiancée Jennifer Cioffi of Fairfield, Sam and Ben, both of Fairfield. He will be especially missed by his granddaughter Jillian Ray, who captured his heart. He also leaves a special mother-in-law, Libby Whiting of St. Albans. His proudest moments were spent with his family at home on Johnny Bull Hill. Raymond graduated from Saint Mary's High School in 1964. He grew up on the Home Farm, working the land with his father and brothers and was later the manager of a large dairy herd on the Stone House Farm in Fairfield. His farm received the statewide milk quality award in 1994. Over the years, he always cherished sugaring season up on Fox Hill, working with his brothers and sister, Joan, his father-in-law Red Whiting and eventually his sons, many nephews and family friends. He was also an accomplished equipment operator, working on a variety of projects both on the farm as well as for the town of Fairfield. Many of his days were spent working alongside his father, brothers, and sons on various road jobs, replacing culverts and repairing bridges on the many miles of roads in his beloved town. He was a member of St. Patrick's Church as well as the Vermont Maple Sugarmakers Association. Raymond would love to be remembered as a loving husband, father, and grandfather, who inherited a wonderful sense of humor and lived his life selflessly. He had the "Howrigan gift" of storytelling, and had a keen memory for all those passed onto him by his father and Uncles, Robert and Harold. He is also survived by his brothers, Michael and his wife Judy, Tom and his wife Sue, and John; his sisters, Margaret and her husband John Pelletier, Jeanne Howrigan, Patricia and her husband Marc Reynolds, Rita Magnan, Ellen Howrigan, Kate and her husband Scott Baldwin, and Joan and her husband Jack Hungerford. In addition, he leaves many aunts and uncles, his Godfather Thomas Howrigan M.D., Godmother Kathleen Connor, Loretta and Henry Magnan, Teresa and John Manahan, Virginia and Anne Howrigan, Bernard Connor and Lexina Nolan, as well as many nieces, nephews, Godchildren and cousins. He was predeceased by his loving mother Neva and father D. Francis Howrigan; his father-in-law "Red" Whiting; his brother F. William Howrigan and his namesake, Sgt. Raymond J. Howrigan, USMC; as well as his grandparents and many aunts and uncles. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday, Oct. 8, 2009, at 11 a.m. in St. Patrick's Church in Fairfield. Howrigan, Sr., of Fairfield, VT, well known Fairfield dairy farmer and sugarmaker, passed away peacefully at his home on Monday afternoon, September 7, 2009, with his loving family at his side. He was born in the stone house on the home farm on June 23, 1924, the youngest son of William and Margaret (McCarthy) Howrigan. Harold married Anne Rowley in St. Ann's Catholic Church in Milton on August 8, 1953 who survives him. Following graduation from St. Mary's High School in St. Albans, he was a lifetime Professor Emeritus of Pine Hill Academy and steward of the land. He was a lifelong communicant and 60-year choir member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Fairfield. Very active in Franklin County and Fairfield town affairs, Harold was currently serving as Town Moderator, Justice of the Peace, and on the Board of Civil Authority. He was the last original charter member of the Franklin County Maple Producers Coop. He was a key contributor and leader in the agriculture industry at the local, state and national levels as a director of the St. Albans Cooperative Creamery for 25 years and President for nearly 20 years. He was currently on the Agricultural Advisory Committee for Senator Patrick J. Leahy. His influence in the dairy industry extended beyond Vermont, as Director for 20 years of the National Milk Producers Federation and former chair of the National Dairy Promotion and Research Board. Over the years, Harold and his family received many awards and much recognition. In 1988 they were Vermont's Outstanding Maple Family; in 2001 he received the Richard E. Lyng Award for "distinguished service to dairy promotion and research'' from the National Dairy Board, and in 2007 Vermont Farm Family of the Year. He was inducted in the Vermont Agriculture Hall of Fame in 2005 and just last week received the St. Albans Rotary Citizen of the Year award. Although he received many accolades and awards, his most precious reward was his grandchildren. He enjoyed watching them work with enthusiasm, being their best fan at sporting events, and playing Texas Hold'em with them. Harold lived and farmed his entire life with a passion that was second to none. He inspired others with his eternal optimism and unwavering commitment to improve dairy and maple for future generations. He was a veracious reader and lifelong student of new technologies and methods. His advice and counsel was sought by many – first and foremost his family as well as his friends. He loved his Irish music, the sugaring season, shooting pool at the Club, dancing to good music, driving his daily circuit, and deer hunting with his extended family. He was so proud to be an American. There certainly weren't many cloudy days in his life. Occasionally, there was just.. an awful nice rain. In addition to his wife of 56 years, Anne, Harold is survived by three sons and their wives; Lawrence and Lisa (Lee) Howrigan, Michael and Penny (Paradee) Howrigan and Harold J. Howrigan, Jr. and his wife, Elizabeth (Heald) Howrigan all of Fairfield, two daughters and their husbands; Bridget and Gerald Rivet of Fairfield (formerly of Cromwell, CT) and Ellen Paradee and Andrew Paradee of Grand Isle. He will be missed by his grandchildren; Harold John III, Brendan, Amy, and Adam Howrigan, Cullen and Kathryn Howrigan, Ryley and Timothy Howrigan, Emerson, Austen, Brennan and Oliver Paradee.

ObituarySep 27, 2009  OBITUARY: BURLINGTON - Rose O'Connell passed away peacefully on Sept. 26, 2009, in Stow, Mass. at the home of her daughter Sarah Kalil surrounded by her children, grandchildren and her faithful caregiver, Mimi Apaloo.

Rose was born on Dec. 15, 1927, to William and Margaret (McCarthy) Howrigan in the stone house on the hill in Fletcher, Vt. Rose was the eighth child and second daughter of William and Margaret's eleven children. The closeness of growing up as part of a large dairy farming and maple sugaring family was precious to Rose. She attended the Shepardson School, a one room school in Fletcher, Vt. and graduated from St. Mary's High School in St. Albans in 1944, and the University of Vermont in 1949. Following graduation from UVM Rose taught school in Vermont and New York.

Rose married the love of her life, Emmett O'Connell of Staten Island, N.Y. on June 23, 1953, in St. Patrick's Church in Fairfield, Vt. Emmett and Rose made their home in Burlington and raised their four children as active members of St. Mark's Parish. Rose left teaching to be with her growing family. She was a dedicated and energetic mother and delighted in being at home with her children. Rose later returned to teaching in Burlington at C.P. Smith School in 1968. During her teaching tenure Rose was named the Vermont Outstanding Teacher of the Year in 1988. Rose's passion for teaching entered all parts of her life with a professional focus on early learning, spending over 20 years teaching kindergarten. She believed in the importance of early education and worked to ignite a desire for lifelong learning in several generations of students. Rose retired from teaching in 1989. In retirement Rose and Emmett set off to travel the United States and eventually parts of the world that brought them to Ireland, Greece, Switzerland, Canada, Germany, Israel and the Caribbean. Rose was an active member of the UVM Alumni Organization and worked as a fundraiser for the Green and Gold Club. Rose was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease and courageously faced the challenge with style and grace, living with the disease for 25 years. Rose took control of her future by staying active, playing golf and tennis, bike riding, square dancing, and remained an active walker all of her life. Rose leaves many circles of friends. The bond between her siblings was passionate and remained constant throughout her life. There are many who were important to Rose: her family, especially her beloved grandchildren, the education professionals, the bridge groups, the tennis and golf friends, as well as the members of St. Mark's Parish.

Rose is survived by her children, Emmett Jr. and Judy O'Connell of Stowe, Vt., Mary and Ken Stella of Vershire, Vt., Dr. Patrick and Susie O'Connell of Virginia Beach, Va., and Sarah and David Kalil of Stow, Mass. Rose leaves ten precious grandchildren, Sara, Sean and EJ O'Connell, Joe and Emily Stella, Kathryn, William and Patrick O'Connell, and Sean and Maura Kalil. Rose also cherished her many godchildren, nieces and nephews. Rose leaves her dear sisters, Loretta Magnan and her husband Henry, Kathleen Connor, and Teresa Manahan and her husband John; and her brothers, Robert Howrigan and his wife Virginia, and Dr. Thomas G. Howrigan; and sisters-in-law, Teresa (O'Connell) Murphy, Anne Howrigan; and brother-inlaw Bernard Connor.

In June of this year, Rose was preceded in death by her husband of 58 years, Emmett; her sister Mary Connor, RN in May of this year; and brothers, Bernard Howrigan in 1916, Senator Francis Howrigan in 2001, Sgt. Raymond Howrigan USMC, killed in action at Iwo Jima in 1945, and Harold Howrigan in September of this year. Rose was also preceded in death by her sisters-in-law, Neva Howrigan, Marguerite (O'Connell) O'Hanlon, and Sister Marie Emmett OSF; and brothers-in-law, Fred Connor, Daniel, Dennis, and Reverend John O'Connell.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday, Sept. 30, 2009, at 11 a.m. in St. Mark's Roman Catholic Church in Burlington with burial to follow in Resurrection Park Cemetery.

O'CONNELL was born on Christmas day, 1921, the son of Dennis and Teresa (Hennessey) O'Connell, he passed away on June 18, 2009, after a courageous battle with cancer. He died peacefully at home surrounded by his wife and children. Emmett was born on Staten Island, N.Y. and attended Blessed Sacrament Grade School, Saint Peter's High School, and Manhattan College. During World War II he was a Bomber Pilot flying B24's and B-29's. He was honorably discharged from the Air Force as a Major in 1947. He was a member of the Air Force Association and a long standing member of St. Mark's Church. He worked for Aetna Life and Casualty before retiring in 1986. Emmett was a devoted husband, loving father, and role model to all those who knew him. He was dedicated to his family and very proud of his children. He enjoyed playing golf and tennis, skiing, gardening, and traveling. Most of all, he enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren who adored him. He was predeceased by his parents; three brothers, Daniel, Dennis, and Father John; and two sisters, Marguerite and Sister Marie-Emmett. Left to cherish his memory are the love of his life, Rose, his wife of 58 years; his children, Emmett Jr. and Judy O'Connell of Stowe, Vt., Mary and Ken Stella of Vershire, Vt., Dr. Patrick and Susie O'Connell of Virginia Beach, Va., and Sarah and David Kalil of Stow, Mass; and his 10 grandchildren, Sarah, Sean, and EJ O'Connell, Emily and Joe Stella, Kathryn, William, and Patrick O'Connell, and Sean and Maura Kalil. He is also survived by his sister Teresa Murphy of Long Beach, Calif; many brothers and sisters-in-law; and nieces and nephews. The family would like to thank Mimi Apaloo, Pat Roder, and Yiinu Tornwini who so lovingly helped take care of Emmett in recent months. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, June 22, 2009, at 10:30 a.m. in St. Mark's Church, North Ave., Burlington. Interment will follow in Resurrection Park Cemetery, South Burlington.
