She later took on the name Rita Collyer as her professional name. She married John S. Wellington, a chemist, in 1912, but he died in 1915. Their son, Robert, died at the age of 4 years. She graduated from Emerson College of Oratory and lived in NYC for 21 years, actively involved in writing and the theatrical world. For 19 years she lived in Washington DC as a ghost writer for politicians, including Vice President Charles Curtis and Sen. Robert Taft. Upon returning home to Lisbon, she served two terms in the New Hampshire legislature.
