"Jerseyville relatives and friends of Scott Gier of the United States Marine Corps Reserve have received word that the young man has been advanced to the rank of Captain. He is now in foreign service.

"Captain Gier enlisted in the summer of 1941, and he received his commission at Corpus Christi in the late fall of the following year.

"The young man is the son of Mrs. Viola Gier of Santa Barbara, California. His wife, the former Miss Jean Maxwell Arthur, is also residing at Santa Barbara. Prior to his entrance into service, Captain Gier was graduated from the Jersey Township High School, and later attended McKendree College at Lebanon and Shurtleff College at Alton."
(I received a copy of this clipping from Charles Gier of Kansas, who received it from his uncle, Dr.Leland Gier, both are deceased, your father's second cousins.

His mother, Viola Mourning Gier, said in February 1983, that after Scott left to go overseas as a Marine fighter pilot, it was 23 months, 2 hours and 23 minutes from the time she said goodbye until he returned.

Major Scott Gier also served his country during the Korean war. In 1951, his jet was shot down behind enemy lines. He was seen by accompanying pilots to be alive in the cockpit of his disabled plane, but by the time would-be-rescuers reached him, he had been shot-- either by his own hand to avoid capture, or by the North Koreans.

ObituaryMar 22, 1951  OBITUARY: Scott was living in Santa Barbara, CA when he entered the service and was the pilot of a F4U-5 Corsair fighter with Marine Fighter Squadron 212, Marine Air Group 33, 1st Marine Air Wing.

On March 21, 1951, while on a combat mission, his aircraft received a direct hit by anti-aircraft fire and he was forced to ditch the aircraft in enemy territory. Efforts to rescue him were thwarted by enemy small arms fire.

His remains were never recovered.

His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.

Major Gier was awarded the Air Medal, the Purple Heart, the Combat Action Ribbon, the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Korean Presidential Unit Citation and the Republic of Korea War Service Medal.from F.A.G. Member #47632171
