ObituaryMar 9, 2011  OBITUARY: PLAINFIELD, NH -- Kate Wilder Gauthier, 96, died Tuesday, March 8 at the Mt. Ascutney Hospital Skilled Nursing Facility in Windsor. She was born on the Read family farm in Plainfield on November 20, 1914 the daughter of Palmer C. and Lena (Rogers) Read.

Until going to the nursing home in 2004, Kate was proud to say that she was the oldest person living in Plainfield who had actually been born in Plainfield and had lived in the town all of her life. She attended the Plainfield Plain one-room school house. She graduated from Kimball Union Academy in 1932 and the Concord Business School in Concord, NH. As a young woman, Kate worked for several Cornish Colony families. She was the personal assistant and cook for Mrs. Charles (Eleanor) Platt, accompanying her on occasion to New York City.

In 1936, she eloped and married Norman Wilder of Cornish. He started a woodworking business and she became the bookkeeper. Mr. Wilder died in 1968.

In 1969, she married Raymond J. Gauthier, he died in 1988.

Known as Mom, Gram, or Aunt Kate, her close friends and extended family looked to her as the matriarch and trusted adviser. She valued her connections with family and enjoyed family traditions, gatherings, and reunions. Kate was an avid reader, enjoyed music, dancing, doing crossword puzzles, and watching the Red Sox games. Most of all, she loved to cook for family and friends, sharing her recipes and passing them down the generations. Kate was elected a library trustee of the Philip Read Memorial Library and served for 12 years. She was a member and treasurer for the Plainfield Community Baptist Church and their Ladies Aid Society, a member and secretary/treasurer of the Mothers and Daughters Club, and member of the Plainfield Historical Society. As a parent volunteer, she cooked for the PTA Plainfield School lunch program.

She was predeceased by her parents, her two husbands, one daughter, Nancy Wilder Spaulding in 2001; her sisters, Phyllis Sutherland, Ada Smith and May Atwood; her brothers, Palmer C. Read, Jr. and Albert K. Read, III; and stepson, Randall Gauthier.

She is survived by her daughter, Beverly Wilder Widger and her husband, Robert of Plainfield; her granddaughters, Sharon Spaulding Royce and her husband, Jeff of Berwick, ME, Linda Spaulding Tenney and her husband, John and Norma Spaulding Campos and her husband, Clebor all of Charlestown, Diane Spaulding Nash of Alstead, and Ann Widger of Washington, D.C; her grandson, Fred Spaulding of Charlestown; her sister Jean Hebert of Keene; nine great grandchildren, three great great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. She is also survived by her stepchildren, Patricia Gauthier Walter of Claremont, Ellen Gauthier Holoway of Santee, CA and Deborah Gauthier of Derry; and several step grandchildren and step great grandchildren.

Friends may call at the Knight Funeral Home in Windsor on Saturday evening, March 12, from 6:00 to 8:00 PM. Funeral services will be held Sunday, March 13 at 1:00 PM at the Plainfield Community Baptist Church with the Rev. Suellen Leugers, Pastor, officiating. A reception for family and friends will follow at the Plainfield Volunteer Fire Department Function Room. Committal services will be held in the spring in the Plainfield Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Plainfield Historical Society at PO Box 107, Plainfield, NH 03781 or to the Philip Read Memorial Library at 1088 Rt.12A, Plainfield, NH 03781.
