Born in Norfolk, he was employed with the Chesapeake Sheriff's Department for 24 years, serving the last 5 years as undersheriff. He also served in the U.S. Air Force Military Police. He was a member of Portsmouth Scottish Rite; Chesapeake Shrine Club; Doric Lodge, (NU)44; Fraternal Order of Eagles, Aerie (NU)795; Virginia Chapter, Federal Bureau of Investigation Academy Associates 2nd Vice President; graduate of F.B.I. Academy 107th session; South Norfolk Ruritan Club; Police Association of Virginia; National Sheriffs' Association; Virginia State Sheriffs' Association; American Jail Association, former board member; American Correctional Association; International Association of Court Officers and Services, Inc; Chesapeake Moose Lodge; Greenbrier Country Club; Stumpy Lake Men's Golf Association; Oscar Frommel Smith Athletic Hall of Fame; American Association of Retired Persons; Fraternal Order of Police (NU)9. Survivors include his wife, Susan C. Byrum; daughter, Amy Strickland of Chesapeake; stepsister, Edith Burke of Allentown, Pa; and one grandchild, Brittany Nicole. A graveside service will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. in Riverside Memorial Park, Norfolk, with Chaplain J.C. Jones presiding. The family will be at the Francis A.
