Book Excerpt*
The home of Elisha Newcomb in Prince George Co., Va., is located about eleven miles from Petersburg and three miles from Prince George Co. Court House. It is four miles from the old Episcopal Church build 1857, all material, bricks, tile for flooring, lumber, etc., being brought from England, United Kingdom. This church was occupied during the Civil War by Federal troops as a stable. It is now (1920) occupied for religious services. The whole Newcomb homestead passed out of the family about 1910, and is till (1920) in a good state of preservation.

Capt. Newcomb was a master mariner in early life and later a farmer. He removed from Massachusetts to New Kent Co., Va., about 1793 and was for a time in command of a ship. Soon after his marriage he retired from the sea and located in New Kent Co., Virginia, later moved to Chesterfield County, VA, and again to Petersburg; from thence to Prince George Co. where he settled upon a farm, naming his home "Washington".2
