ObituaryAug 11, 2002  OBITUARY: HOPE MILLS -- Retired Army Sgt. Maj. Richard Hayes Gardner Sr., 70, of 5935 Rehoboth Road, died Friday, Aug. 9, 2002, in Cape Fear Valley Medical Center.

Mr. Gardner was in the military for 27 years.

The funeral wll be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday in Highland Funerall Service & Crematory in Fayetteville by the Rev. Bruce Suggs. Burial with military honors will be in Lafayette Memorial Park in Fayetteville.

Mr. Gardner is survived by his wife, Verladean H. Gardner; two sons, Richard H. Gardner Jr. of Engelwood, Colo., and Bobby D. Gardner of Hope Mills; a daughter, Vickie S. Campbell of Hope Mills; his mother, Dorothy E. Gardner of Denver; a brother, Jack H. Gardner of Cedar Edge, Colo; two sisters, Pat Smith of Denver and Dorothy Mier of Federal Heights, Colo; and six grandchildren.

The family will receive friends Monday from 1 to 2 p.m. at the funeral home.
