ObituaryNov 26, 1982  OBITUARY: SANDGATE – Lothar Wuerslin, acclaimed wood sculptor and prominent Sandgate resident, died at his home on Thanksgiving Day after a short illness. He was 55.

A native of Augen, Germany, he came to the United States in 1929 and studied at the University of Wisconsin, the University of New Hampshire and both the Brooklyn and Boston Museum School for Fine Arts before moving to Sandgate at 19 years of age.

At his 179-acre form in Sandgate, he crafted painted carvings, mostly of women and children on a large scale, reminiscent of cigar-store Indians and the illustrations of the American artist Rockwell Kent. He also carved the great seal of Vermont for the Statehouse in Montpelier and an equivalent work for the Arlington Fire Department.

Mr. Wuerslin had several one-man shows in New York and Vermont and his works done in basswood and mahogany were on display at the Stratton Arts Festival and at the Southern Vermont Art Center and Deely Gallery in Manchester.

Although most of his life-sized works are in private collections, other pieces are on permanent display at the Waitsfield Museum and the Bennington Museum.

An Army veteran, he served with the U.S. occupation forces in Germany following World War II.

Before his illness, Mr. Wuerslin was a fine arts instructor at Ethan Allen Community College in Manchester and at SVAC.

He was also active in the Sandgate community. In his earlier years, he had served as a justice of the peace and was a member of the Planning Commission and the board of selectmen. He was also a member of the Bennington County Regional Commission.

In addition to being town moderator for the last 10 years, he was also the health officer and drove the town’s only school bus from 1967 to the spring of 1982.

He is survived by his wife, Anne; three sons, Christopher, Hasso and Tristan of Sandgate; two brothers, Manfred and Siegfried; a sister, Brunhilde; and several nieces and nephews.

There will be no calling hours at the Hanson-Walbridge Funeral Home in Arlington, which is handling arrangements.

A memorial service will be held Sunday, Nov. 8, 1982 at 1 p…m. kat the Sandgate Church.

Contributions in memory of Mr. Wuerslin may be made to the Arlington Rescue Squad.
