She was born, in Reichenbach, Germany, to Eric and Else Weyl. Doris spent the duration of World War II as a preteen refugee in England. Her mother and father moved the family to the United States following World War II where her father brought German technology to the textile industry in New York City. Doris attended college at the University of New Hampshire in Durham, where she met and married Paul Pickwick. After graduating with a Bachelor of Science degree in Bacteriology in 1951, she moved with her husband to Kentucky. In Kentucky, Doris was a home maker and a substitute teacher for special needs children, while she raised two children of her own. At the age 54, once her children were in college, she started a new career working for the Kentucky Job Placement Services helping many people find employment for over 20 years. It was a job she loved and she continued until she retired at the age of 74. Her interests included sewing, art shows, and collecting everything, although much of her time and energy was devoted to raising her family and taking care of her husband, who had Parkinson's disease, until he passed away at age 74. She attended the Thomas Jefferson Unitarian Church, in Louisville, Kentucky with her family.
