Chronological Events

Birth*Sep 5, 1894 Leon Ellsworth Hopkins was born on Sep 5, 1894 at Junction City, Yellowstone County, Montana, United States, Junction City was located on the north side of the Yellowstone River, just to the west of its confluence with the Bighorn River. The community began in 1877 with the opening of a general store by Paul McCormick and Major Fellow Pease. By 1883, nearly 500 residents called Junction City home and the town reportedly had as many as fourteen saloons. The Northern Pacific Railway arrived in the area in 1882, but on the south side of the river, which may have hastened the decline of Junction City. A major fire in 1883 then destroyed many of the buildings in town, and Junction City never recovered. The first office in the area was known as Peasefort; it opened in 1879 (February 13) with its namesake Major Fellow Pease as postmaster. The name was changed to Junction in 1880 (August 13) and Henry Keiser served as the first Junction postmaster. The Junction post office lasted until 1907 (December 31). Today, nothing is left of Junction as any remaining buildings were either moved across the river to Custer, or swept away by the Yellowstone River.2
