ObituaryOct 27, 2001  OBITUARY: BRATTLEBORO -- Norman Marcus Crowninshield, 77 of 107 Elliot St., died Thursday morning, Oct. 25, 2001, at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, N.H., where he had been a patient for the past three weeks.

Mr. Crowninshield was born in Jamaica, Vermont, on Jan. 23, 1924, the son of Wallace A. and Edna E. (Bourne) Crownishield.

He was raised and educated in Jamaica and had attended Leland and Gray Seminary in Townshend.

He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Army's Company E of the 313 Infantry Regiment under Gen. George Patton, involved in the battles and campaigns inNormandy, Northern France, the Rhineland and central Europe. He wasa recipient of the Purple Heart medal and the European African Middle Eastern Theater Campaign ribbon.

Following his honorable discharge from the Army in December 1945, he returned to Brattleboro, working at the former Holden & Martin Lumber Co.

For many years he drove the delivery truck for Custom Laundry and then for Lawton Dry Cleaners. He had also worked as a sales representative for DeWitt Grocery Co. and had been employed at the former American Optical Corp.

Mr. Crowninshield was also employed as custodian at the state building off of Main Street. Following his retirement in 1986 he drove bus on a part-time basis for Vermont Transit Co.

He was a life member of the V.F.W. Carl Dessaint Post IP1034 in Brattleboro, held membership in the Disable American Veterans, John Blake Chapter in Brattleboro, and was a former member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles, Brattleboro Aerie #2445.

Of his hobbies and interests he enjoyed hunting, fishing, especially deep sea, vegetable gardening, World War II history, reading and time shared with his family.

On July 15, 1946, in South Londonderry, Vermont. He was married to Mildred B. Shattuck who survives.

Besides his wife of 55 years he leaves, one son, Gregory N. Crowninshield of Woodstock, Vermont, a daughter, Diane Knapp of Taylorville, Ill., one sister, Vera Bouchard of Colchester, Conn., two grandsons, and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by one brother, Bernard L. Crowninshield, and a sister, Della Brooks.

Graveside committal services with full military honors will be conducted Saturday, Nov. 3, at 11:00 a.m. in Pleasant View Cemetery Route 30 in Jamaica with Rev. Robin Lunn, pastor of Jamaica Community Church officiating. There are no calling hours.
