He was born in Nansemond County, Va., to the late George William Byrum and Elsie Baines Byrum. He retired as a supervisor from Virginia Power Co. after 40 years of service. He was also a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II. Mr. Byrum was a member of West End Baptist Church for 59 years where he was a member of the Progressive Men's Bible School class. He served several terms as chairman of the Board of Deacons and also served as chairman of ushers. He was an active layman in the Blackwater Baptist Association and a trustee of the Memorial Trust Fund of West End Baptist Church. He was elected Deacon Emeritus in 1998.
Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Eleanor Woolard Byrum of the home; a sister, Odelle Byrum Oliver; and brother, John Alden Byrum Sr., both of Suffolk; and several nieces and nephews.
A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday at West End Baptist Church by Dr. Donald J. Dunlap, Dr. Robert B. Marr and the Rev. T. Floyd Irby Jr. A committal service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at Holly Lawn Cemetery. Sidney F. Harrell Funeral Home is in charge.
