ObituaryJul 22, 1999  OBITUARY: Frederick Spaney Jr., 85, of Nashua, died Tuesday, July 20, 1999, en route to Southern New Hampshire Medical Center, following a lengthy illness.

Mr. Spaney was born May 31, 1914, in New York City, son of the late Frederick and Letitia (Heaslip) Spaney Sr., and had lived in Nashua since 1935.

He was the widower of Lucille Tolles (Kimball) Spaney, to whom he had been married for 59 years. She died in 1996.

Mr. Spaney worked in Glen Cove, N.Y. and New Jersey before being employed by Nashua Corp. in 1935, where he worked in laboratory development. In 1968, he started the computer supplies division, which was later renamed the computer products division, and became group vice president and director in 1971. He retired in 1979.

After retirement, he worked with Dr. W. Edwards Deming in introducing statistical quality methods to Nashua Corp.

Mr. Spaney was director of the American Red Cross in Nashua, a member of the initial Nashua Capital Improvements Commitee in the '70s and trustee of the Hunt Community in the '80s. He was president of the Nashua Country Club, and member of the board of directors at the former Nashua Memorial hospital. He enjoyed curling, boating, golfing and playing tennis and bridge. He had a hole-in-one at the Shore Acres in Sebasco Estates in Maine in 1961.

He graduated from Newburyport (Mass.) High School in 1930, where he played on the track team. He attended MIT at the age of 16 and graduated in 1934 with a bachelor's degree in chemical engineering.

Besides his wife, Mr. Spaney was predeceased by a sister, Helen Spaney Thompson.

Survivors include a daughter, Lucinda Tolles Spaney of Lexington, Mass; three nephews, William Thompson III and his wife, Susan, and A. Frederick Thompson and his wife, Dorothy, all of Westerly, R.I., and Richard Thompson and his wife, Mary of Longmeadow, Mass; a niece, Judith Tilton Kimball of Rock Island, Ill; a cousin, Muriel Evans Shaw of Nashua; and many friends, including Ellen Arouchon of Nashua.

The Davis Funeral Home in Nashua is in charge of arrangments.
