ObituaryApr 11, 2002  OBITUARY: SUNBURY - Flora Rountree Carter, 88, of the 400 block of Zion Road, died April 10, 2002, in Down East Health and Rehab, Gatesville.

Mrs. Carter was born in Gates County and was the daughter of the late Sornie Ralph Sr. and Aur-H elia Stallings Rountree. Receiving her certification from UNC-CH, she had retired in 1981 after 20 years as a public health nurse serving the Perquimans County Health Dept., the Hertford-Gates Health Dept., and the Elizabeth City District Health Dept. Prior to that, she had worked as a nurse at Roanoke-Chowan Hospital in L Ahoskie. A member of Damascus Christian Church, she also was a member of the NC Public Health Association and the NC State Re- tirees Organization.

Surviving are her husband, L Wilbur Brooks Carter Sr. On Feb. 26 they celebrated 63 years of marriage. Also surviving are two daughters, Carole C. Smith and husband Jack of Gates and Alice C. Moore and husband Edward of Sunbury; two sons, Johnny Carter and wife Mary Linda of Sunbury and Dr. Wilbur B. ''Bill'' Carter Jr. and wife Melissa of Chapel Hill, N.C; three sisters, Carmen Hilton of Suffolk, Virginia Snipes of Portsmouth and Helen Taylor of Virginia Beach; two brothers, Robert Rountree of Laurel, Md., and Herbert D. Rountree of L Gatesville; six grandchildren, L John L. Smith III, Arlette' Carter, Joanna Oxindine, Jeannette L Moore, Erin Carter and Meredith Carter.

A funeral will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. in Damascus Christian Church by the Rev. Forrest Guth- rie. Entombment will follow in the church cemetery. Friends may join the family Friday from 7 to 8:30 p.m. in Miller Funeral Home, Gatesville, and other times at the residence.
