Born in Sunbury, N.C., she was a retired purchasing agent for Norfolk Naval Supply Center. She was a member and former Sunday school teacher of Talbot Park Baptist Church and a member of the Esther Bible Class and Christian Business Women's Association.
Mrs. Hires was a devout Christian who spent her life in service to Christ and now reigns with him.
The widow of Kermit Hires, she is survived by two daughters, Christine Gonzalez and her husband, Agustin, of Norfolk and Dolna Brieske and her husband, Craig, of Derwood, Md; a son, Michael D. Hires of Norfolk; two sisters, Mary Elizabeth Lassiter of Elizabeth City, N.C., and Dorothy Carter of Hobbsville, N.C; five brothers, Edward Lassiter of Waxhaw, N.C., Fred Lassiter, John C. Lassiter and William Lassiter, all of Sunbury, N.C., and Paul Long of Lexington, S.C; and a grandchild, Rachael Gonzalez of Norfolk.
A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Talbot Park Baptist Church by Dr. Tim Dixon and the Rev. Keith Martin. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today at Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Tidewater Drive Chapel.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Talbot Park Baptist Church Benevolent Fund.
