ObituaryNov 28, 1999  OBITUARY: Lillian Lassiter Walker died peacefully at her home on Friday, Nov. 26, 1999. The widow of William Winder Walker, she was born in Fluvanna County, Va., to the late John Robert and Lillian Lacy Lassiter.Walker grew up in Driver, Va., and was a resident of Norfolk for more than 60 years. She was an avid gardener, reader and traveler. For 11 years beginning in 1964, she acted as assistant to her husband in the operation of the family business, Winslow Walker Co., ship chandlers specializing in service to British shipping companies. After Mr. Walker's death in 1975, she became the sole owner and operator of the company and, as such, one of the very few female ship chandlers in the United States. She retired in 1981.Walker was a volunteer at Norfolk's Board of Elections and was a member of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution, the United Daughters of the Confederacy, the Farmington Country Club, the Belvedere Garden Club and Epworth United Methodist Church.is survived by her son, Grayson Watkins Walker, his wife, Christine Poole Walker, and her dearly beloved grandson, Andrew Hughes Walker, all of Alexandria, Va.memorial service is planned for late December. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the charity of your choice.
