ObituaryNov 18, 1998  OBITUARY: NEWPORT NEWS - Mark R. Nichols, 82, died Monday, Nov. 16, 1998. A native of Newark, Delaware., raised in Auburn, Alabama., he had been a resident of Newport News since 1940.
Mark attended Auburn University, graduating with a B.S. in aero engineering in 1937 and a B.S. in mechanical engineering in 1938. While at Auburn, he achieved highest honors and was awarded his fraternity's Clifford B. Scott Scholarship Medal. In addition to the Sigma Phi Epsilon social fraternity, he was a member of the Tau Beta Pi, Phi Kappa Phi and Spiked Shoe national honor fraternities and was a member of the Auburn track team.
After graduating, Mr. Nichols worked as a design engineer for Allis Chalmers Manufacturing Co. for two years before joining NACA/NASA at Langley Field.
Mr. Nichols retired from NASA as the chief of the full-scale research division after 34 years of service. For the last 16 years in his position at NASA, he was charged with the responsibility for the development and research utilization of nearly all large Langley wind tunnels and providing extensive research and analysis support for the U.S. military and intelligence communities, the FAA and the U.S. aircraft industry.
He participated personally in the design evolution of many of the aircraft and missiles of the period. He was commodore of the Warwick Yacht Club in 1961 and a member of the James River Country Club. Mr. Nichols received recognition and numerous awards for his services. The most important of those were the Langley award for outstanding leadership and the overall agency award for outstanding scientific achievement. He is an associate fellow of the AIAA, a member of the Auburn University Engineering Advisory Council, a visiting scientist of George Washington University and a distinguished research associate of the Langley Research Center.
Survivors include his wife of 56 years, Edith M. Nichols; his two daughters, Barbara N. Reams of Lynchburg and Jean N. Cox of Newport News; his son, Mark L. Nichols, M.D., of Raleigh, N.C; and seven grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held 1:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 19, at Hidenwood Presbyterian Church by the Rev. Augusta "Micki" Vanderbilt and retired Chaplain Michael Costanzo.
