Milit-Beg*1862 Benera E. Sherman began military service in 1862 He served in the Civil War. At age 28 he joined the NH 15th Regiment, Company C.. He served under Capt. Moses Lang. He mustered out on 13 Aug 1863. My cousin sent me a copy of what he thought was Benera Sherman's (our ggf) discharge. I read each word with a pick glass. It turns out that for his 60th birthday in 1894 his wife Elizabeth (our ggm) had his service written out on a fancy document that looks like a monument. It's a great piece.

However, here's the interesting thing. It talks about being camped in Baton Rouge and then taking part in the siege of Port Hudson, LA. It sounded familiar, so I pulled out Hon. Edgar J.'s book. Edgar was in a hospital with malarial fever in Baton Rouge. He checked himself out and went to join in the battle at Port Hudson. He was the only officer there recognized for gallantry.

Later he went to Fort Delaware. Small, small world in the 1860's.
