Book Excerpt*
The 1850 Scott County, VA Census lists Tivis W. and wife Lucy as living next door to Henry Powers, age 42 and wife Matilda (Magee) age 22. Also living next door to Henry Powers was John Powers, age 57, born VA and his wife Polly age 55. (note from Jane Newberry - John and Polly Powers could have been the parents of Lucy Powers who married Tivis W. Newberry). He appeared on the 1900 Census in Martin County, Kentucky which states he is a lawyer. He died in 1915 in Martin County and was buried in Inez, Martin County, KY in 1915. I just received a newspaper clippin of the obit of Tivis Worthington Newberry so I thought I would share it with th list in case some of you are interested. Tivis was a brother to my G-grandmother Mary Elizabeth Newberry Bond, Daughter of Henry Clay Newberry. I have no idea what newspaper this is from:

Mr. Newberry for a number of years was a leading member of the Kentucky Legislature, being always elected from a district strongly Republican, though always the nominee of the Democratic party. He was a first cousin of Hon. Samuel Newberry, of Big Four fame, also a first cousin of the late Col. J.B. Richmond, of Gate City, Va.whom he resembled very much both in physical appearance and in his happy social disposition. He was a grandson of of Senator Griffith Dickenson and a cousin of the Secretary of War Dickenson, of Taft's cabinet. Mr. Newberry was the father of Hon. Jeff Newberry, of Huntington, W. Va., and of Samuel W. and J.C. Newberry, of Inez, Ky. He was a member of the M. E. Church, South, under the auspices of which his funeral was conducted.3
