She was born in Putney, the daughter of James and Ina (Pierce) Ellis. On July 4, 1941, she was married to Lucius W. Martin, who predeceased her in March 1987. Her greatest joy was the laughter of children, and there were many. She was known for having hands that children reached for and a smile that stopped the tears. Martin of Westminster, Henry K. Martin of Townshend and Preston J. Martin of Brattleboro; four daughters, Cheryl M. Cook of Jamaica, Lucinda G. Martin of Jamaica, Deborah J. Johnson of Kingman, Ariz., and Carlotta L. Woodruff of Jamaica; a sister, Iona; 12 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren and many nieces, nephews and cousins. In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by a daughter, Mary G. Martin, a grandson, Robert Martin, four brothers, Henry Ellis, Kenneth Ellis, John Ellis and Francis Ellis, and three sisters, Yona S. Frost, Leona B. Ellis and Vera I. Stalbird. Funeral services for Mrs. Martin will be on Tuesday at 10 a.m. at the Jamaica Congregational Church. Burial will follow at the Westminster Cemetery. Calling hours will be Monday from 7-9 p.m. at WHITE FUNERAL HOME in Townshend. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Grace Cottage Hospital in Townshend or the Vernon Green Nursing Home Activities Fund, in care of the funeral home.
