Mr. Howland was educated in the public schools of Mobile, and at the age of 15 became a clerk for John Cortwright in the lumber business. From 1853 until the war broke out he was with a firm of auctioneers, commission merchants and real estate agents. He served in the Southern army in the 21st Ala. Vol. Inft., and was wounded in the leg. In 1868, he commenced business for himself as an auctioneer and real estate agent in Mobile, where he resided.1
