Birth*Aug 25, 1758 Jehiel Gates was born on Aug 25, 1758 at East Haddam, Middlesex County, Connecticut, United States.1,2 
 He was the son of Judah Gates and Abigail Hurd.1 
Milit-Beg*1775 Jehiel Gates began military service in 1775 Enlisted in the Revolution and served 3 years as a private in Capt. Eliphatet Holme's company;- Colonel Huntington and Colonel Starr - regiments on the Connecticut line. He recieved his honorary discharge at Elizabethtown, New Jersey. Records show he was with Washington in the Battle of Monmouth in May 1778. The U.S. forces routed General Clinton's British troops from advancing across New Jersey from Philadelphia. This was the longest and last battle fought between the two main armies, and thereafter fighting shifted to smaller forces in the southern areas of the Americas. Before 1785, Jehiel moved to Litchfield, Litchfield County, Connecticut. Then to Shoreham, Addison, Vermont.
In 1815 He settled in Dansville, Steuben, New York. He recieved a $96.00 pension (see file S44875) was entered on the roles 27 April 1819.
In a document dated 18 Oct 1820- Jehiel stated his wife's age as 58, that she was almost a cripple and had rheumatism. We said he was rheumatic and haveing lost the sight of one of his eyes, was unable to work very much as his trade, a carpenter. He also was living with his son, Harry in Dansville, New York where he died.1
