A native of Sunbury, N.C., she was the widow of Noel M. Hobbs and a retired homemaker/seamstress. Mrs. Hobbs was a member of South Norfolk Baptist Church, where she served many years as a Sunday school teacher, was WMU president and Southside WMU group leader.
Survivors include three daughters, Anita Matteson and husband Burton J. Matteson III of Virginia Beach, Dorothy Hackworth and husband Charles G. Hackworth of Chesapeake and Christine Ussery and husband Joe W. Ussery Jr. of Chesapeake; a sister, Edna R. Hoffler of Sunbury, N.C; a brother, Frank L. Rice and wife Frances Rice of Sunbury; eight grandchildren, Beth M. Davis, Charles G. Hackworth II, David A. Hackworth, Burton J. Matteson IV, Cynthia U. Fryar, Joe W. Ussery III, Meredith L. Ussery and Jennifer M. Ussery; eight great-grandchildren; and a special friend, Mike Norman. She was predeceased by her parents, Annie Byrum Rice and Hugh L. Rice.
A funeral will be held Thursday at 2 p.m. in South Norfolk Baptist Church by the Rev. Frank Hughes and Dr. A. Wayne Cook. Burial will be in Riverside Memorial Park, Norfolk. Visitation will be held today from 7 to 8 p.m. at Francis A. Gay Funeral Home, South Norfolk Chapel. The family will be at 3707 Sandpiper Lane, Chesapeake, at all other times.
Memorial donations may be made to South Norfolk Baptist Church Renovation Fund or Comfort Care Hospice, 667 Kingsborough Square No. 202, Chesapeake, VA 23320.
