| Obituary | Mar 7, 2013 | OBITUARY: WESTFORD -- Margaret P. "Phyllis" (Valentine) Seddon, a longtime Westford resident, died Tuesday, February 5, 2013, in Westford, after a period of declining health, aged 89 years. She was the beloved wife of George S. Seddon, with whom she celebrated 64 years of marriage. Born in Cambridge, MA, Sept. 7, 1923, she was the daughter of the late John G. and Andrina (Manson) Valentine. She received her early education in the Cambridge school system and graduated from Cambridge Rindge and Latin School with the Class of 1941. After high school, she accepted a position as Secretary to Dr. Frank Lahey, the founder of the Lahey Clinic. Phyllis enlisted in the U. S. Navy in August of 1944, and years later, would proudly recall, "I spent my 21st birthday in Boot Camp". She served with the WAVES Hospital Corps as a Hospital Apprentice, First Class, at Naval Hospitals in Bethesda, MD, Chelsea, MA, and Quonset Point, RI, where she cared for soldiers who were severely wounded during Pacific Theater Operations. She also served in the obstetrics unit, helping to deliver many babies. She was honorably discharged on March 23, 1946. Upon her return from service, Phyllis furthered her education at Bryant and Stratton Business Institute in Boston. "Didi" married her beloved George on September 4, 1948. The couple settled in Watertown, MA, where she became associated with Bacharach Photography as the Assistant to the Treasurer, until her retirement in 1987. Mrs. Seddon had deep roots in the Salvation Army, going back to the ministry's early days when her father, John, traveled with founder, General William Booth, to preach hope and salvation to the desperately poor. Phyllis, along with her husband, was a lifelong, dedicated volunteer. Phyllis was a number one fan of all things Westford, especially its school sports programs. For over 30 years -- no matter the sport, the location, or the weather -- she and "Gusto George" could be found cheering from the sidelines, running the popular 50/50 raffle (raising thousands of dollars for the Boosters Club over the years), and encouraging "their kids". In recognition of her many contributions, Phyllis, along with her husband, was inducted into the Westford Academy Sports Hall of Fame in 2004. "Didi" was also a fabulous cook, and was known to make a mean pot roast. Most of all, she was a kind, loving person who will always be remembered for her patriotism, devotion to her husband, and dedication to the youth of Westford. SEDDON -- In Westford, Feb. 5, 2013.
