Roger Alling 1st emigrated from England to New England about 1638. He settled in New Haven, then known as "Quinnipack." He was given a desirable and eligible location in the original "layout" in 1641. His residence was at the corner of Church and George Street. He was received into the First or Center Church in 1641 and in March, 1646 Roger was allotted pew No. 5 in the meeting house. He was a blacksmith as well as a planter or farmer and was an active businessman. He was a Sargent in the first military company and was the first and only elected treasurer of the colony until he became ineligible by being chosen a deacon in the First or Center Church in 1669 which office he held until his death. All through his life he was one of the prominent leaders in the directing and carrying on the civil and religious interests of the new settlement. Roger married Mary Nash in 1642 and they had 7 children; Mary, Samuel, John, Sarah, Elizabeth, Susanne, and James. Roger died September 27, 1674.
