2 August 1990 - 28 February 1991
The Persian Gulf War, or simply the Gulf War, also known as the Operation Desert Storm, First Gulf War (2 August 1990 - 28 February 1991) and the Second Gulf War, or in Iraq, it was known as the Mother of all battles was a United Nations-authorized military conflict between Iraq and a coalition force from 34 nations commissioned with expelling Iraqi forces from Kuwait after Iraq's occupation and annexation of Kuwait in August 1990. Though there were nearly three dozen member states of the coalition, the overwhelming majority of the military forces participating were from the United States, with Saudi Arabia, the United Kingdom and Egypt as leading contributors, in that order. The majority of the war costs were paid by Saudi Arabia - around $40 billion of approximately $60 billion.
