ObituaryMar 14, 1829  OBITUARY: DIED - Yesterday, Mrs. Margaretta Carleton, aged 26; wife of Mr. Oliver Carleton, Preceptor of the Academy at Haverhill, Ms., and daughter of the late Hon. Clifton Clagett. Mrs. Carleton, after a short illness, returned to the residence of her parents in this place [Amherst NH], in September last, hoping by a short visit to restore her health; but was soon brought low by an affection of the lungs, and has since declined in strength till her death. Through all the late distressing scenes in the afflicted family; the sudden illness and death of her father and of her infant child, she was wonderfully sustained in her weak state. In all her sickness and trials, "patience possessed her soul," for she was stayed on Him who she believed was all merciful and gracious and just and cheerfully acquiesced in his will. She died in triumph, in the continued and unshaken hope of a blessed immortality. Amiable and affectionate in her disposition, she was greatly endeared to all her acquaintance, by whom her early departure is mourned. To her husband and her near relations this repeated bereavement is heavy and irreparable; their only consolation is an assurance that through a grievous loss to them, it is great gain for her.
