ObituaryFeb 18, 2017  OBITUARY: RUTLAND, VT. - Eileen (Thayer) Brough, age 93, of Rutland, died on Wednesday, February 15th 2017 at the Mountain View Center in Rutland, Vt.

Eileen was born on July 12th 1923 in Orwell, Vt., the daughter of George Thomas and Mary Agnes (Lafley) Thayer.

She was educated in Hubbardton and Orwell schools and graduated from West Rutland High School with the Class of 1941.

Eileen married her husband, John F. Brough, on October 26th 1947 at the St. John the Baptist Church in Castleton, Vermont.

In 1954, Eileen and John built the Castleton Snack Bar and brought the first soft ice cream, frozen joy to the area.

From 1958 to 1968, they owned and operated The Stables, a well-known Lake Bomoseen restaurant and lounge, also known as Crystal Ledge Lodge where many guests became family.

After the sale of The Stables, they operated the Fort Warren Restaurant in Castleton, Vt. until the sudden death of John on August 22nd 1969.

Eileen returned to her former occupation as a telephone operator for the New England Telephone Co. where she had been employed from 1941 to 1954 as switchboard operator for the Town of Castleton, Vt.

She retired in 1984 after 28 years as an operator, supervisor/trainer and her last assignment was in the engineer's office.

Eileen continued to work for the next 30 years for Fitz-Vogt, provider of Meals on Wheels, as a meal deliverer and site manager at the Bardwell Hotel and for the Clarendon Seniors Community Grange Center where she enjoyed delivering the Thursday meals for more than 20 years until her retirement in December 2014.

Eileen worked for many years at Rutland County polling sites as a clerk and was a justice of the peace.

She was a member and past president of the Castleton Women's Club and a member of the Castleton American Legion Auxiliary Post #50.

Besides her parents and husband, she was predeceased by her daughter, Suzanne; her brother, George Buddy Thayer; her longtime partner, Hubie Pratt; and by Thomas' partner, Peggy Gage.

Arrangements by the Durfee Funeral Home in Fair Haven, Vt.

There will be a spring burial in the Brough family plot at the Hillside Cemetery in Castleton, Vt.
