ObituaryJun 21, 2008  OBITUARY: SHIRLEY -- John W. Sullivan, 67, died Tuesday, Nov. 18, 2008, at his home after a brief illness.

He leaves his wife of 44 years, Jamie (Alling) Sullivan; a daughter, Dawn E. Sullivan, of Winthrop; and his granddaughter, Lillian Sullivan.

He was predeceased by his son, Kevin Sullivan, in 1991.

John was born in Ayer on March 5, 1941, a son of the late Patrick and Margaret (O'Malley) Sullivan and was a longtime resident of Shirley. He was a 1959 graduate of Notre Dame Preparatory High School in Fitchburg.

In 2007, John retired from the Ayer Department of Public Works as foreman of the Transfer Station. Prior to that he worked for the Reserve Training System Medical Unit at Fort Devens and also for nearly 30 years at the former Sampson Cordage in Shirley.

He was a communicant of St. Anthony's Church in Shirley and had served on the Shirley Finance Committee. An avid fisherman, he was a member of the Shirley Rod & Gun Club and the National Rifle Association. Many years ago he coached in the Shirley Little League and Junior League programs.

John served his country from 1962 to 1964 as commander of the Operational Test and Evaluation Force in the United States Navy. After his discharge he transferred to the Naval Reserve.

A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 22, at St. Anthony's Church, 14 Phoenix Street, Shirley. Burial will be in the parish cemetery.
