ObituaryFeb 9, 2017  OBITUARY: Francis James "Frank" McCaffrey, 91, died February 6, 2017, after a short illness.

Born December 28, 1925 to Francis C. and Margaret F. (Wallett) McCaffrey in Burlington, Frank was a Navy veteran of World War II, serving in the Pacific Theater aboard USS LST 1106. He entered the U.S. Merchant Marine as a communications officer in 1948, serving until his retirement in 1985.

Frank said he never had a desire to travel beyond the boundaries of Chittenden County. In his failure to honor that desire, he traveled many thousands of nautical miles through all the world's major seas, visiting six continents during his career.

Frank married the former Pauline Bernadette Cadieux, daughter of Gustave and Alvine (Gagne) Cadieux, in Burlington on July 16, 1949. They moved to South Burlington in 1953, living since in the home they built for their growing family.

Frank kept a meticulous log of his voyages, and was an honest observer of the world. He was keenly aware of the reception afforded to sailors arriving in port, and invariably mentioned whether people acted with hostility or friendliness toward people like him.

Frank also noted in his log the births of his seven children, all of whom survive him: Marie M. McGarry and husband Stephen, of Burlington; Michael P. and wife Kathleen (Wegner), of Douglass, Tex; Matthew J. and wife Alison (Weschler), of Cheshire, Conn; Mark E., of Maspeth, N.Y; Maureen M. Mucha and husband John, of Elmore, Vt; Marguerite C. Kyle and husband Scott, of Walpole, N.H; and Melissa J. Warren, of Westminster, Vt.

Frank was a member and Past Master of Washington Lodge No. 3 F&AM, the York Rite Bodies of Burlington, the Scottish Rite, and Temple Chapter 75 OES. He was a member of the Westville (N.Y.) Historical Organization, and of VFW Post 6689, Essex.

In his latter years Frank again left the bounds of Chittenden County, driving many miles for an international delivery service.

He was also a devoted grandfather to sixteen grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren. Frank recalled his realization, at the age of 50, that he knew nothing about his family's history, and his determination to change that. He compiled a family genealogy, devoting many hours of research and correspondence to the work. His descendants have been bequeathed several ancestry volumes and photographs he researched and published.

In addition to Amateur Radio activity under the call sign WA1QAF, Frank enjoyed small carpentry projects and "tinkering" in his shop. He was an avid reader of history and biography, and immersed himself in the music of W.A. Mozart. He began each day with several crossword puzzles—hard ones, completed in ink. He loved to tell stories of his childhood in bygone Burlington. His days ended at 10 p.m. with a kiss from his beloved wife and a sound night's sleep.

Frank was preceded in death by one sister, Doreen L. Chmielewski, of Tampa, Fla; his parents; and four grandparents: James C. and Caroline (Sinclair) McCaffrey, of Burlington; Henry Wallett, of Rutland; and Mary Ada (Garrow) Brow, of Burlington.

Frank's family will host a celebration of his life at the Burlington Elks Lodge, 925 North Avenue, Sunday at 2 p.m. Those wishing to honor his memory may make a donation to Fall Mountain Special Olympics, 25 Mountain View Rd., N. Walpole, N.H. 03609.
